February 25, 2021 Magical Zinnia Patch Oil on Copper Painting TO see! Festus Has New Backpack!

"Rapture" 20x26 oil on copper 1995$ framed in gold or black with gold includes shipping and frame.

I finished this large zinnia patch painting last night!

I went downstairs again to look at it a few hours later.

There is something magical about a giant zinna patch late in the Summer.

I love to spend time painting zinnias at Charlotte Rhoades Garden.

Hummingbirds, Caterpillar, Bees, Monarch Butterflies, White Butterflies, and all kinds of

other insect feast on the pollen.  I just love to watch all the happy action!

I painted all the flowers and leaves before I added the butterflies and insects.

The Monarch Butterfly came out pretty good

!

I paint a caterpiller, bees, and even a praying mantis in this area of the painting.

Close up of the praying mantis and a white butterfly.

Festus was sitting on my lap getting petted while I drew the hummingbird with my brush.

He seemed happy getting petted but realized I was painting!

He lowered his eyes and put his ears back!

I realized how mad he was with the situation!

I stopped painting and petted him but I am afraid it was too late!

Festus hopped off my lap and found a perch nearby to glare at me.

I had been painting 12 hours a day for 4 days and Festus had enough!

Today Festus has forgiven me.

He spent many hours in his cat stroller on the back deck admiring the backyard.

The dogs were outside all day long.

The fresh air was nice.

Robert surprised us all with a cat backpack!

He asked me to place Festus into the backpack.

We were all delighted to see Festus's smiling face!

I think Festus will be going to the beach with Robert and the dogs!

Festus fit perfectly inside the backpack.

Monet closed his eyes when he saw the camera.  He is doing fine.

Have a wonderful night!

February 23, 2021 Festus Is Robert's Cooking Assistant! Floral Painting Done.

"Secret Garden" 20x26 oil on copper 1995$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping is included in the price.

Here is my painting efforts!  I saw this scene near the school house vegetable market

in South Thomaston, Maine one hot August day.  I stood there admiring the scene!

I should paint painted it that day. It was a good winter painting distraction.

Here is a close up of my favorite part.

Caterpillar on the left, bee on the orange zinnia, with a white butterfly on the yellow zinnia.

Four Monarch butterflies coming in to collect pollen.

"Thuya Garden Evening" 7x5 oil on copper 350$ framed in either gold or black with wood

includes shipping.

I was thinking of painting a larger version of the Thuya Garden evening painting.

I worried that it might be too dark for a large works.

It is a very peaceful pleasant scene.  I miss the days one could enter Thuya Garden

after hours by the sliding wood gate.

Robert spends a lot of time in the kitchen cooking for the dogs and humans!

Festus likes to keep Robert company, sitting on the window ceil, keeping quiet.

There is Festus.  He has grown so much!

Robert showed Festus pan fried fresh Alantic Salmon.

He chirped with approval!  Yummy!  Yummy!

We sat outside for a while.  All of us!  Festus was inside his cat stroller!

I am starting on another large zinnia painting.

Festus likes to visit in my lap three or four times a day.

He is almost grown up, becoming more independent, but still likes to cuddle.

Lily thought Festus's idea was great!

She is a hundred pound lap dog!

Festus likes to assist with framing and packaging!

He makes sure the box will safely transport a painting!

I should design "Inspected By Festus" stickers.

Lily has the right idea!  Good night!

February 18, 2021 What Do We Do Around Here On A Cold Icy February Day?

I took a break from painting to get a drink of water.

I found Festus sitting in the kitchen sink inspecting vegetables being peeled by Robert!

Festus had such a sweet look on his face.

Robert offered Festus a piece of vegetable to smell.

He sniffed it and then winced.

Festus is a tuna and chicken man.

Not an hour later I could not believe my eyes!

Robert was strolling Festus through the house!

Festus was sitting up in his stroller with happy eyes!

I think the cat hating Robert is turning into a cat loving man.

Only a cat like Festus could do that!

Robert said Festus was sitting in his stroller waiting for someone to stroll him around!

Festus just loves the movement.

The dogs all ran around the house like something terribly exciting was happening!

Well that was a fun time!

Festus is still working on Monet's acceptance.

Monet still growls at Festus when he lays down with him to take a nap.

Robert told Monet to be nice to Festus.  Monet looked at him and stopped growling.

Spring will so arrive!

"Monhegan Spring Bath" 20x26 sold.  Thank you.

February 15, 2021 Trip To Pemaquid Lighthouse To Paint! Festus, The Maine Coon Cat On Sled.

"Pemaquid Standing Strong" 6x8 oil on copper 450$ framed in gold or black with gold.

shipping and frame included in the price.

Thank you Gail for your painting title help!

I felt like driving to Pemaquid Lighthouse to paint!

It was 23 degrees so I left my traveling buddy, Festus at home.

I did miss him.  I may have to put a jacket on him and take him out with me next time!

"Pemaquid Evening" 6x8 oil on copper. 450$ framed in gold or black with gold. Shippng included.

I was inspired to paint a friend's photo, Sherrie Tucker.

She takes amazing photos of the Pemaquid area.  Thanks Sherrie.

There was no sunset tonight!  I still enjoyed it.

I saw a beautiful fox!

This 12.00$ sled looked perfect for Festus!

I put his large cat harness on him.  I set him down on the sled.

Robert pulled him for a short ride.

Festus decided to hop off the sled.

I brought him back upstairs where he purred and purred so loud!

I think he thought it was super exciting!

Festus sat in his basket.  He has grown so much that he can't lay down in it!

He gave me a perpexed look after this super cute look.

Monet has a meet and greet appointment with a new vet who has ultrasound capabilites

in their office on March 2.  He wanted to evaluate Monet first.

Monet has a new posterpedic bed.  He is not suffering at all.  He plays just as much as the

other dogs.  It could be an injured toe nail.  Who knows?

The dogs all enjoyed Festus being outside with them.

Festus likes to watch birds out the window.

He misses his screenroom back at my parent's house in Florida.

There have been a few sad looks from Festus.

Have a great night!

February 11, 2021 Wonderful Art Patrons. Thank you.

"Moon Over Port Clyde" 20x30 oil on copper 2250$ framed in gold or black with gold.

An art patron suggested I paint a full moon into an older painting.  She said she would

buy it if I did this.  I looked at the painting and thought a moon would improve the painting.

I worked on adding moonlight and the moon for hours.

Here is the painting before I reworked it.

The art patron was amazed at the new rendition of the painting.

No sale yet as she purchased paintings from someone else.

I was so happy to get the moon suggestion to improve the painting!

She told me she thought if I added the moon it would ruin the painting.

Another art patron said she would be interested in a painting of this photo.

I asked her what size she might like it but she did not reply.

I gave the painting my best shot!  I worked on the painting for two days, total of 11 hours.

"St. Augustine Beach" 6x8 oil on copper 450$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping included.

I showed the art patron the finished painting but she said it didn't speak to her.

Again I just let it all roll right off my back.  I took a nap though for four hours!

I woke up with a new fresh feeling.  What matters is that I like the painting.

Last night flowers arrived from a different art patron.

They were very pleased with their dog portrait.

Perfect timing!  Festus loved the flowers.

Thank you.

A completely different art patron sewed me this wonderful traveling bag!

I thought this bag was amazing!  So did Festus.  He climbed into the bag as far as possible!

Thank you!  What a wonderful surprise.

"Festus With Lady Violet" 4x6 oil on copper private collection.

"Festus" 4x6 oil on copper private collection.

I called Festus's name several times to get this pose so I could paint him.

Festus was a wonderful model coming and posing until after about 10 times of being called.

Then he went inside his cat stroller to safety!  I am still learning how to paint a cat.

An art patron said I should have painted his ears also.

Yes I should have turned the copper panel vertical so I could paint his ears.

Painting is very very difficult especially trying to paint a cat!

Festus has the right idea of how to handle being stuck inside during the winter!

He climbed into his penthouse being stored indoors.

He was swinging from the platforms inside of the penthouse.

Lady Violet took a look!  Can I come in and play?

I will be taking Monet to the vet for an xray.

The seajerky is not helping with his mobility.

I would like to see if there is a tumor pressing on his spine.

His symptoms are exactly the same as my girl Daisy who had a tumor.

Also Monet will not let me brush him.  Daisy was like this too.

I will ask for pain medicine for Monet.

Good night.  Thank you for your help and the gifts.

February 8, 2021 Festus And Golden Retrievers Have New Toys!

I purchased new toys for the pets.  I was trimming the tags off.  The dogs were

outside.  Festus laid down with the toys!  He always surprises me.

Did I just see Festus bite the pink bear on the foot?

All the dogs were excited to see the new toys!  They were all wagging their tails.

Festus grabbed the same bear Lady Violet took.

Monet decided he would like this duck.  He had a few toys in his bed before long!

If Lady Violet wanted something he had, he dropped it, and she took it.

Lady Violet gets her way.  I felt so bad for Monet.

Monet was very happy with his toys.

Only Festus went near the pink bear.

Twice today I wondered where Festus was in the house. I called him.  Nothing.

Then I found him sleeping among the toys.

The second time I found him sleeping in his stroller!

Lady Violet and Festus as best friends.

She doesn't mind a bite or two from Festus.

Late at night these two are hilarious!

"Moon Over St. Augustine" 6x8 oil on copper.  Sold.  Thank you.

I finished the moon painting started on location, worked on in the hotel, and then another

three hours work back in Maine.  I had to use my memory to finally finish the painting.

"Sanibel Shell Seekers At Sunrise" 5x7 oil on copper 350$ framed in gold or black with gold.

shipping included.

I really worked this plein air painting over.  I had to add many people searching for shells.

"Sanibel Moon" 8x6 oil on copper.  Sold.  Thanks.

I refined this plein air painting too.

"Sanibel Dream" 6x8 oil on copper 450$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping included.

I straightened the horizon line and touched up the chair.

Here is Poppy with her daughter Lily.

Monet spends the most time outside.

He doesn't like to climb the stairs to come inside.

I give him a treat and show him how to come to the front

door.  He loves this.  He is eight years old now.

This was the sunrising over the Belfast harbor a few days ago after 24 hours of driving!

I am still recuperating from that long drive.  I am varnishing and framing and making

watercolor thank you cards!  Good night.

February 6, 2021 Festus, The Orange Maine Coon Cat, Is Back Home With HIs Golden Retrievers!

I put Festus in his stroller so that he could join his doggy friends out front.

Poppy, Lily, Lady Violet, and Monet were enjoying the crisp Maine air!

Festus just loves his stroller.

I put him inside the stroller to show Robert.

Robert was smiling and laughed as Festus sat inside his stroller.

I pushed the stroller around the room to demonstrate.

Festus sat tall enjoying every moment.

Here he is!  Let's go!

We zip up the screened part before we go outside.

He can not escape.  He is safe.  We bought the stroller at Petco.

Festus and Lady Violet are back to being great friends.

Monet was watching them play.  He was making little yipping sounds.

Poppy was watching too.

Festus was sniffing inside of Lady Violet's ear!

Monet was making more noises.  I went over to see what was happening?

Festus was climbing into the paper bag.

Monet was searching every bag that came into the house.

He was hoping for doggie toys.  I told him soon Monet!

I will find some doggie toys soon.

The dogs missed Festus and I.  They are so glad we are back!

Robert liked the few new things I bought home.

He had a tshirt, little french plates, and we have a new chair from Costco!

Here is my new art studio chair.

Festus and I will enjoy this chair!

Here is another photo from yesterday's sunrise after our 24 hour straight drive.

Wow we are still recovering and lucky to be alive!

I was humming the song, "Fame" all the way home.

Here is the sunset the moment Candy's son, wife, and three daughters and I united on the beach.

Notice the heart shape?  What a nice symbol.

There are actually two hearts.  One in the center and one upside down at the top.

Wow now I just noticed a bunch of tiny heart shapes all around it.

I thought about the group meeting in St. Augustine.

The purpose of this gathering was for us to all be friends to help and support each other.

While we were there I noticed Larry coughing heavily.  He was not in good health.

One morning when Larry and I were alone, I asked him, "Is it lung cancer?"  He looked surprised

and said, "Yes."   I asked him if Candy's son knew?  I am not sure what his reply was but I did

make sure her son knew about the lung cancer.  I think we should all be there for Larry just

as he was Candy's hero we will be his hero.  Maybe that was the biggest reason we were gathered

in St. Augustine.  There were a few people who asked me if I asked God why we were all gathered?

Yes, of course, but I didn't expect a direct reply.  I do think Candy was there with us in spirit.

Candy is in heaven.  She is doing great there.  She is pain free!

How did Festus get his name?

I watch Gunsmoke a lot.  My parents watch Gunsmoke and I enjoy the show.

One of my favorite characters is Festus.  I like his personality.

A year before I found Festus on unclehenry, from a breeder, Zen Lion in Vermont,

I thought about owning a red and white Maine Coon cat named Festus.

I wanted to bring him out painting with me.  I would put a red bandana around his neck.

I thought Festus would be great company while I painted.

Festus would be a great name for a cat.  Later I discovered a cousin in California has a

Maine Coon cat named Dillion!  What a coincidence!

Another question I was asked, "Why did you buy a cat when you have four golden retrievers?"

I know I know we have enough animals!  A cat is very different than a dog.

Maine Coon cats have dog like characteristics.

I love a Maine Coon cat mix named Dundee who lives in Stonington, Maine.

I would visit him, pet him, take photos of him, and bring him presents.

This went on for years!  I started to think, what happens if Dundee isn't there anymore?

I need my own cat.  When the virus changed the world in March, I started to dream more of

owning a Maine Coon Cat.  I found kittens on unclehenry.  For a month I inquired from Zen Lion

about the price of Festus.  There were three red kittens at first.  Finally when Festus was 11 weeks

old I could not stand it anymore!  I pooled together every last dime and credit and came up with the

1850$.   I paid her.  Then I started to drive to Vermont.  I had no address yet.  I decided she would

call me as I was driving and then give me her address.  I stopped to buy a litter box, toys, and

anything else he would need.  She called to give me her address.  She laughed when I told her

the exact time I would be there.  She handed Festus to me when I first arrived.

He just laid in my arms.  He was so gentle.  He did not struggle.  He was so tiny.

Then I asked to see the Father and Mother.  She said she didn't normally show the rest of the

cats but she liked me and showed me.  Later I was tapping my fingers on the wood floor and all the

kittens came over to inspect it.  She said she never saw anyone do that before.  She asked me if I would

like to be a Maine Coon Cat breeder. I did think about this but declined.  I only want one cat, Festus!

I asked three different people if they would come get Festus a few days after he arrived.   Festus needed all my attention

the first two weeks.  I did not paint!  I didn't think I would ever paint again because little Festus needed me.

Luckily all three people declined taking Festus! I got over the guilt I felt buying a cat!

I just felt a ton of guilt because my golden retrievers all looked at me with eyes

that said, "We were not enough?"  They seemed to understand that Festus could be loved just

as much as they could be.  Festus became a member of the family. I started to paint again.  Festus learned

to leave me alone when I painted.  Things all worked out!  Life is more fun with a cat.  Good night.

February 5, 2021 Drove 24 Hours Straight. No Hotel Rooms Available! Home in Maine.

The first day of driving from St. Augustine to South Carolina in eight hours was fine.

The second day of driving from South Carolina to Maine took a straight 24 hours.

The problem started after we left I 95 in New York to a turnpike, 90, 91, 84.

There were very few hotels noticeable from these turnpikes and highways.

We did stop at a few but they would not except pets.

We drove on.  We looked for hotels for a total of 7 hours.

Some hotels we finally found off an exit were closed, full, or they would not accept Festus.

I think if we had stayed on I 95 we would have been able to find a hotel.

Instead we drove.  We did try to rest twice.  Temperatures were 22 or 19 degrees.

I kept the motor running with the heat on but Festus was miserable meowing at the

top of his lungs.  At one point he had his front feet on the drivers side window and

was doing a swimming motion.  We drove.

After about 1am in the morning no hotels were open.

It was useless to even try.

We drove.

Here is Festus looking enlightened as we listened to Joel Osteen on Sirus radio.

This is before the evening of searching endlessly for hotels.

Festus and I did great driving up to ten hours a day.

I think he did very well considering the situation!

At 5:30 am during the first night at the hotel I was awaken to the most dreadful smell.

"What is that Festus?  My goodness what did you do?"

I turned on the light to see Festus sitting there with dirty feet.

"Oh no Festus!  What happened to you?  Your little white feet are all dirty!"

I gave Festus an emergency foot bath.  I thought the first floor of the Hampton Inn

in South Carolina would evaccuate from this smell!  I took care of the litter box.

I triple bagged the litter so the maid would not pass out in the morning when she opened

our door!  I cleaned up all his dirty paw prints.  I wiped out the bathtub, sink,

bathroom floor.  I always bring cleaning supplies!  We went back to sleep.

I turned the fan on in our room.  Within an hour there were no hints of the incident!

Festus was purring.  He was happy again!

Other than Festus's smelly incident there were no other issues other than not finding a hotel.

I had never driven 24 hours straight before.  We were very lucky to get home safe.

I don't think I would do that drive again without first making hotel arrangements.

We almost tried to get a room at one place but 20 people standing out front of the hotel

at 2:00am worried us.

We did have one room available in Connecticut.  She would charge us an extra 50$

on top of the room charge because it was 3:00am.  That did not make any sense to me.

I explained I only wanted to sleep at the hotel from 3:00am to 9:00am.

She said she could not do that.  She wanted us to stay from 3:00am, another entire day, then check

out at 9:00am.  If she had been kinder I would have considered it!

We would need to stay a full night.  I told her no thank you.  I had not told her about

having a pet at that point!  I wonder what the pet charge would have been.  That was at the Best Western Plus.

These are crazy times.

The sun started to rise as we were an hour from the house!

We pulled over to take a few photos.

I thought it was beautiful.

Gorgeous!  Maine is very beautiful.

We are home.  The dogs gave us a great welcome.

Robert is here.  He took the dogs to the beach.

Nice to be home!  Thank heavens!

February 3, 2021 Leaving Florida for Maine. Message From My Friend.

As I was driving out of St. Augustine, Florida to head home, I felt a icy coldness

in my body I had never known.  I paid attention to my surroundings.  I heard on the radio,

"Remember! Remember!  Remember!"  The song was "Fame" by Irene Cara.

I made a mental note to look at the lyrics later.  If Candy was going to send me a sign by

song, this would be a very good song.   I thought about all of this.  What could it mean?

Candy must be doing well in heaven.  We will continue to feel her presence.

She wants us to remember her.

I think Candy has been with us in spirit.

I had just spent several days with my deceased best friend, Candy's Son,

Granddaughters, his wife, her best friend, and her boyfriend.

Somehow Candy's Son had booked a vacation last May for this

same hotel in St. Augustine as I had.  Their hotel room was directly across from mine on the

second floor.  How convenient.  It was very obvious that we were suppose to be at the same

location so we could talk about our Candy.  We went to breakfast and dinner for many nights.

We told stories.   Larry was her life long hero.

Larry and Candy were always just friends.

He saved her many times.  Candy was a single parent with three very young children.

She was a victim of domestic violence.

She worked hard at various jobs to support her children.

Larry paid for a private college, Emily Riddle, where she graduated with

her aerospace engineer degree!  Candy became a rocket scientist!

She worked at a prestigous company designing rockets and airplanes.

I remember being very proud of her accomplishments.

When I look back, I see Candy as a strong positive person, who overcame so much.

Ron, her last boyfriend, saved her life several times.  They were vacationing in Negril, Jamaica on two

different occasions when Candy became seriously ill.  During one of these Jamaica trips Ron helped

provide for private medical care and private airplane, doctor, nurses, to transport her back to Miami.

Ron lost 24,000$ for a plane that never arrived. He was scammed.

They were able to fly out of Jamaica on a regular commercial airline.

Candy was seriously ill from a condition called NASH.

Basically Candy had a very bad fatty liver that had nothing to do with alcohol.

  She had congestive heart failure.

Her organs were failing.  They could not do dialysis.

They think she may have had Covid 19 virus.

She passed away after visiting with her Daughters,

Sons, Larry, and Ron in a Miami hospital after flying out of Jamaica the second time.

She had rallied in their company and failed the next day.

I did one moonlight plein air painting during my visit.

I spent most of my time visiting with Candy's relatives and friends.

I enjoyed the company of Candy's Granddaughters very much.

Candy loved them. They miss her.

After Candy's Son and family left, Ron had left the day before, and Larry left, I decided to head

back home to Maine.  I could not figure out why I had come to St. Augustine? I never painted

there before. During my past visits to St. Augustine, I would shop and eat at the Columbia Restaurant.

Why had I not headed back to Sanibel Island after framing and shipping two commission paintings?

I loved painting in Sanibel Island!

I suppose I was meant to be exactly where Candy's friends and family met at the hotel in

St. Augustine for the purpose of remembering Candy.  I just had a strong sense to go to

St. Augustine.  After it was all done I had the feeling, "Go home".  So I am headed home.

My little traveling buddy, Festus, did great today in the van.

We drove all the way to North Carolina.  Festus started to meow loud at the sunset.

I decided it was time for the hotel.  He loves being strolled into the hotel in a dignified

manner now.  Everyone behind the hotel counter comes out to greet him.

He meows a few times.  They ask many questions about Festus.

Good night.

February 1, 2021 Painted The Moon Rising Over St. Augustine Beach. Discovered My Deceased Best Friend's Family At The Hotel.

Here is the moon rising over St. Augustine Beach in progress.

I worked on the painting last night until the clouds covered the moon leaving me in the dark!

I went uptairs to my hotel room and worked on the painting from memory and a photograph.

Now the plan is to take the painting back out tonight for more work.

My back is doing 100% better thanks to the purchase of this cat stroller.

Festus loves it!  He sat inside very comfortably while I strolled him along

the beach.  Dogs ran by but Festus was safe.  He had his little paws tucked

under him.  This morning he hopped into the stroller hoping to be taken

to the beach again!

Here is Festus inside his screened cat stroller.

Another great thing about the stroller is people can not pick Festus up or pet him.

Festus is germ free!

An amazing thing happened to me while I am here.

My best friend, Candy, died December 18, 2020.

Candy's Son Ellery, his wife, and three young girls are staying at this hotel.

Their room in the hotel is directly across from my room.

Candy's boyfriend, Ron, who I introduced to Candy, is here at the hotel visiting from Wisconsin.

Larry, Candy's other best life long friend is coming here tonight.

What are the chances of this happening?  We will all be having dinner telling stories of Candy.

I think my friend Candy, who is in heaven, has made this happen.

She must be smiling to see her Son, Grandchildren, best friends, and a love of her life here together.

Candy and I went to Jamaica in November 2012.  I wrote about that whole month

trip on this blog.

Have a good night.
