October 31, 2021 Painted A Spooky Graveyard at Night! Exciting New Plans!

"Somber Autumn Evening" 8x10 oil on copper 650$ framed in gold or black with gold.

I think this is a good painting to share for Halloween!

Festus has his little kitty suitcase, tool box litter box, and new

school bus scratching post packed in the car.

The 2016 Hyundai Sante Fe had mysterious engine/electrical/transmissions

issues after only 20 days of ownership.  Quirk Cars R Us allowed us to trade it

in for a 2017 Lincoln mkz SUV with only 107,000 miles for an extra 1000$.

I packed up all my paintings, frames, art supplies, easels, Festus possessions,

and clothes.

Festus and I are leaving Tuesday morning to drive to Florida.

We will be purchasing a mobile home in Fort Myers Beach.

It is a 250 square foot trailer with a screen room.

I think this will be the perfect place for us to winter.

I am getting too old to handle Maine Winters.

We will drive home to visit Robert and the dogs often and visit for a few weeks at a time.

We will miss them.  I believe having a new place to paint where the economy is thriving

would benefit us all.

I look forward to long walks on the beach, swimming, and painting.

I hope this adventure will be rejuvenating.

The lot rent is 480$ a month, water 20$ a month, and electric under 100$ a month.

I hope to get internet as well..so maybe another 75$. Otherwise Mcdonalds has free internet.

I will be paying for the mobile home with a certified check.

I won't need to make any payments for the mobile home.  We will own it free and clear.

It was recently renovated.  I will share photos of it once the purchase is done.

Festus is going to love watching lizards from the screen room.

Robert is excited about our new adventure.

He hopes to find a dog sitter, fly to Fort Myers, for his two week vacation.

Robert will continue to take the dogs to the beach everyday, feed them, and take good

care of them.  He spends the most time with the dogs.  They sleep during the day while

he is at work.  I know he will send me photos of them to share.

I will be painting on Sanibel Island and Captiva Island!

I plan to also continue painting from Maine photos.

I can always sell the mobile home if I want to and come back home.

I think this will be very exciting.  Painting purchases are always appreciated.

I have two lot payments and one car payment saved.

Good night.

October 27, 2021 Finished A New Pumpkin Farmhouse Painting. Lots of Toys For Festus?

"Tis Autumn" 14x20 oil on copper 1200$ framed in your choice of gold or black with gold frame

shipping and frame are included in the price.

I finally finished this painting.  I worked on this one for two weeks!

Some paintings go fast and some are slow.  I wish I could figure out why?

I am pleased that is turned out well.

I like this magical scene I encountered a few years ago during a drive to Vermont to paint.

I am very glad I took many photos of the scene.

Robert brought home two big bags of dog toys and treats given to him by

a physical therapy client whose dog did not like plush dog toys!

Festus was the first to inspect the bags!  The dogs went off to the beach with

Robert while Festus went through each bag.  He was pulling the toys out!

I took all the toys out of the bag and removed the tags.

Festus was thrilled with the bag!  Do I look good in this bag?

I got down on my hands and knees and said, "Yes!  You sure do!"

Festus played and played with all of the toys for the hour the dogs were gone!  He fell asleep!

He was rolling around the toys.  He is a character.

He played with every single toy!  It was like Christmas for Festus!

This time of the day Festus normally takes a nap so he was fighting it!

He wanted to play but he was very sleepy!

The dogs came back from the beach to discover all of the new toys!

It took some coaxing for Monet to take the basketball player doll.

Lady Violet wanted all the toys!

Festus was shocked to see the toys being taken by the dogs!

There were so many dog toys in Monet's bed!  He could not lay down.

I scooped up all the toys to one side of his bed.

Festus was still playing!

Monet's favorite place to lay down is right next to my chair.

He likes for me to pet, talk to him, and groom him.

I pass by this scene on the way home from swimming every night.

I love how atmospheric the scene looks!

Maine is very dark in October.

There is a creepy feeling to me even during the day!

At night there is great mystery and creepiness!

If I were braver, I would set up and paint here, at night!

I doubt I could coax any Maine artist to join me in this endeavor.

Good night!

October 25, 2021 Painted a Skull. South Thomaston Vegetable Stand Painting. Animal Shenanigans!

"Keep Smiling" 10x8 oil on copper framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping and frame are included in the price.

I was inspired to paint a skull after watching "Raiders of the Lost Ark" movie.

I remembered the skull has been a very popular subject to paint among artists.

Here is a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.

Everyone paints the skulls differently depending on their frame of 'mind'.

I would like to think my skull is a happy one.

Here is a great painting by Pieter Claesz.

Paul Cezanne.

"Get Your Pumpkins" 8x10 not finished yet.

I painted this grisaille of a vegetable stand in South Thomaston.

They have since renovated the old school house and cut down the weeping willow

tree. I wanted to paint the scene when it had a lot of character.

I will paint the color on the underpainting soon.

Cool weather makes our animals act differently!

Robert was hiking down the beach at sunrise at Sandy Point Beach in Stockton Springs.

Festus was in the backpack riding on Robert's back as they were walking down

the beach. All four golden retrievers were running along with them.

Festus stuck his paw out of the zipper area and managed to open the backpack!

He leaped out of the backpack!  He ran down the beach!

Robert noticed the backpack became lighter, turned around, and found Festus

running away!  Robert and the dogs chased Festus all the way down the beach.

He captured Festus.  No other people or dogs were there to see all the commotion!

I asked him if Festus was ever going to the beach again?  He said "NO!"  But then he

said he might try to better

secure the backpack with ties so he could not escape again!

Festus was fine.  His hair looked a little disheveled.  He had a wild look on his face!

Then Lady Violet stole a rotisserie chicken off of the kitchen counter!

Lady Violet only ate the meat luckily before Robert discovered her!

He put the chicken back into the container and announced this would be

used for the dogs dinner tomorrow.  I made a mental note not to dine on that chicken!

Lily has a new game at night.  She very quietly whines at 12am at night.

When I come to see what is wrong with her, she is standing here like this, and will

walk to the stairs.  She is trying to get me to walk her up to bed!  I turn on the

stairway light for her.  I tell Lily it is ok if she goes to bed without me.  She walks

up the stairs.  She needs more encouragement from me after she gets to the top of

the stairs to go to sleep.  Finally she goes into Robert's room to sleep.

Festus and Lily had a starring contest!

Then Festus leaped up, placed his paws around her neck,

and was holding her tight!  Lily decided to fight back.  She growled at him.

Poppy who was trying to take a nap was on alert!

Festus leaped up into the air!

Lily acted like she would chase after Festus.

Things were calm after this episode.

Last week we had beautiful mild weather for the Autumn.

This week it is cold and rainy.

I will make some lentil soup!

Good night.

October 21, 2021 Sold The Van. Finished The Commission! Now I Might Put On A Steel Roof!

Here is the finished commission of a Condo in Bar Harbor. 12x20 oil on copper.

You can see a female and male cardinal in the trees on the right side.

They were very happy with this painting.  I showed them this image via email.

I am very grateful.

I decided to work more on this painting.  Here it is now.

"On The Hunt" 6x4 oil on copper 125$ framed in gold.  Shipping included and frame.

I was just fiddling around painting late one night.

I thought the tree was a little boring by itself so added the cat.

I may add a little orange to the cat.  It was just for fun.

The dealer in Ellsworth called to let me know they could not find anything

wrong with my 2017 Promaster 2500 Ram van.  The computer did not register any issues.

I was happy to hear this.  When I delivered the van to them for service the transmission

was hardly working.  They had put in a new transmission 12,000 miles earlier.  I decided not

to drive the van any longer.  I did not want to deal with the transmission issues.  I accepted their

21,000$ deal.  They paid off the loan.  They gave me a check for 5,232$.

I asked Robert how he felt now that he will not need to make a 750$ van payment every month

for another two years?  He said he did not know how he felt about it.  Gee it has to feel good!

I suggested he not work on Sundays at the nursing home.  He doesn't need to anymore.

We have tried to call roofing companies here in Maine.  No one returns our calls to put on a metal roof!

I told Robert about an idea I had!  There is a place in Thorndike that will cut metal roofing.  We would rent

a uhaul, get the cut metal roofing, and bring it home.

Then we would try to install the metal roof on the flat area of our house first to

see if we can do it. We can watch U tube videos to learn how to install a metal roof.

I really do not think it is very difficult.

The roofing area of our house is only 800 square foot.  There is a flat area of the sunroom that would be

easy to do first.  Then there is a small front porch area we could do next.  The most difficult area is the main roof.

Our friend Ted has done metal roofing before and said he would guide us through it as long as he stays on the

ground.  We have about a month before it snows.  At least we have the money to do it!

The two boys were cute last night.  Monet and Festus.

Sweet as can be!  Good night!

October 20, 2021 Working on A Commission of a Bar Harbor Condo.

I have been working on a challenging commission.

The architecture is complicated.

The perspective is complicated.

Then I needed to create more information for an extreme panoramic to fit a beloved frame.

I had to create more space on both sides of the given photograph as well as try to fix

the perspective.  It looked like a fisheye view.

Here is the 12x24 oil on copper painting.  I will let it dry for a week before I work more

on the painting.  I will need to add more color, straighten up any crooked lines, and lighten

up some things.  I have been working on the painting for about 32 hours so far.

Sometimes Festus likes to play with the dog toys.

Lady Violet walked up to Festus to watch.

I thought Festus gave her such a sweet look.

He likes to roll the balls with his feet.

He wrestles with the ball.

Festus is very unique.

I looked up to see Robert towel drying Lily.  He had the towel under her arm pit

and was pulling the towel from side to side very industriously.

It made me laugh out loud!

The dogs were all wet from swimming during their trip to the beach.

They all go to the beach every night unless the tide is high.

Lady Violet was standing in line to get herself dried.

I drove to Bangor to walk around a little and take photos of the foliage.

Good night.

October 17, 2021 Painting of Frost on Punkins at a Farm

"Pumpkins and Crows" 8x10 oil on copper sold. thanks.

"When Frost Is On The Punkin" 8x10 oil on copper.  Sold.  Thanks.

I have been working in my studio on these two paintings.

I am glad they are going to good homes.  I enjoyed painting them so much!

I am working on a panoramic commission to fit a frame.

The measurements given to me were 11.5 x 23.5.

After I cut the copper, I thought about it, and asked the art patron to make sure the measurements

were taken from the back of the frame, inside the perimeters of the back opening..not the front!

My fears were confirmed.  New measurements are 12x24 inches.  I am so glad the thought

came to be before I started to paint the painting!  Now the painting will be able to be framed

in their frame!  I cut the piece of copper into two 8x10s.  I will be able to use this size for

future paintings.  This new commission will be a challenge. It is a very long intricate building.

Festus appreciated a little box.

He has been laying inside the box for days.

He tried to attack Lady Violet, the young Golden Retriever, last night.

Lady Violet decided to stand up fast, growl at Festus, stomp her feet, and run.

Festus was disappointed. He flopped over on the floor and let his stomach show.

He covered up his face with his paws.  He chirped.  He usually does this to evoke

a smile from a person!  Lady Violet walked off.  I went over and told him he was

real cute.  He chirped a few more times.

I think Monet is feeling better now that he has finished his antibiotics for Anaplasmosis.

I will keep an eye on him.  His appetite is back to normal!  He talks for someone to come pet him

just like he always has done.

Lady Violet is hanging out in the backyard.

Days can be very dark in the Fall and Winter.

I will be staying home this Winter.

Good night!

October 13, 2021 Festus Hunts Lady Violet! Stonington Fall Photos.

Festus has been hunting everyone in the house ever since he dispatched a mouse!

I had my ankle grabbed and bitten.  My arm was grabbed by a stealth white paw !

Lady Violet knew something was up when Festus came over to her last night!

Monet and Poppy cleared the room!  They knew Festus was going to pounce!

Festus jumped on top of Lady Violet, put his paws around her neck, and grabbed her

by the ear!  Lady Violet was not afraid.  She did not do anything. "Oh that is just my

silly friend Festus playing."

Festus jumped on Lady Violet a few times before moving on to moths, a lady bug,

and a mosquito!  I had to laugh!  It was funny.

The Dahlia flowers were gone in front of the yellow house in Stonington.

I painted on Church Street with another artist working in watercolors.

I wiped off my painting.  I might switch to a different medium to work en plein air.

I need a different approach to inspire and challenge me.

A few different buildings in Stonington are being painted this bright red!

We have had warm temperatures this October.

Good night.

October 11, 2021 Festus Was Successful At Mouse Hunting Last NIght! Schoodic Painting.

"Schoodic Autumn Colors" 6x8 oil on copper 450$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping and frame included.

I painted this today in Schoodic.  I was amazed at the change in color of the wild rose bushes.

The orange leaves was a nice complimentary color against the sea.

Festus was hunting a mouse for hours last night in Robert's room.

I heard Robert ask Festus if he found a mouse?  He turned on the lights. The mouse

ran to Lady Violet and hid in her hair!  Then he said the

mouse ran into his closet. He unpacked his closet.  The dogs exited Robert's bedroom.

He turned the lights off and went back to sleep.  Festus chased and chased the mouse in

his room.  When he caught the mouse he made calls like a lion.  Robert turned back on

the light. He said Lady Violet was laying in front of Festus.  Festus was laying in front of

Lady Violet.  The dead mouse lay in Festus' paws.  Festus rubbed himself all over the mouse.

He was still roaring like a lion.  He wanted Lady Violet to see his mouse.  Robert took away the

mouse so they could all get back to sleep.  Festus pouted.  Robert said Festus looked real sad.

I was wondering what all that noise was about last night!  Festus has not eaten too much today.

I suppose he is still excited from his hunt!

Good night.

October 10,2021 How To Paint Leaves and Branches With Oils on Copper. Transportation Solved!

I thought I would share how I painted branches and leaves in the upper corner of this

14x20 oil on copper painting.  I knew this passage would be difficult.  I wanted to have

depth in this area.  I did not want a flat look.  I decided to start with neutrals first.  This

neutral area will be the back of the tree when it is finished.  So you are looking through

the leaves and will see the back of the tree not just the front leaves.  This was the goal!

More neutral developing.

Still more!  The leave area of this painting took me 10 hours to paint.  It was an important

area of the painting.

I started painting with color.

More color.

Some sky painting done in between the leaves.

Softening edges, more color, more sky.  Back and forth.

Finished.  I think it looks nice.  There is movement.  The leaves were rustling with the wind.

"Blowing In The Wind" 14x20 oil on copper 1200$ framed in your choice of gold or black

with gold and shipping is included.

Finished!  Took me two long fun days.  I did not mind staying home to work.

I petted the dogs and cats more.  I went swimming at night when Robert brought his car home.

I decided to sell the van once it is out of the shop.  There are no vans currently for sale in Maine.

I should get a good price for this van.  I purchased a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe sport for 14,400$.

It has 121,000 miles.  I didn't purchase the extended warranty.  Quirk dealership install new

brakes, new windshield, new window, new tires, and serviced the AC.  The car was garage kept out

of East Millinocket.  I believe the high miles were highway to drive to Bangor.  Many people who

live way out in Millinocket travel to Bangor for shopping.  The SUV is super clean.  They took

very good care of the car.  It drives like it is new.  Once I sell the van, I will pay off the low

balance owed.  Robert will not pay for the 750$ van payment anymore.  Then a roof will be paid

for with cash.  This is the plan.  I will pay the 340$ a month for 4 years.  It will feel good paying

for my own vehicle.  I will be sad to say goodbye to the van I have driven for four years.  I won't miss

having the transmission issues.  I think the van breaking down again may have been a blessing

in disguise.  I would have never considered selling the van.

Festus enjoying the morning in his outside penthouse..in the top hammock!

He is the most serene here.

A paper towel roll provided a welcome toy!

Lady Violet wanted to know where her paper towel roll was?

I suggested sharing.

Festus in his much loved box!

Lily showing off an apple in her mouth to her Mom Poppy.

She walked back and forth wagging her tail making a "oooh ohhh" sound.

Good night.

October 7, 2021 Embracing Being Without A Van For Months Ahead.

"Snow On Pumpkins" 14x20 oil on copper in progress.

I finished this grisaille painting.  I decided to use a little more Cadmium Red Light than

the Cobalt blue to give it a warmer look.  Soon I will add the full color on top of this dried

painting.  I am doing a large series of this scene varying each painting so they will be unique.

I added a few people selecting pumpkins.  This one will be lighter.

At 12:30 am Festus gave me a scary look!  I think he is trying to get me in the Halloween

spirit.  I told him I was very afraid.  He was like this for several minutes.

Festus has very large feet because he is a very large Tom cat!

He would look funny if he had tiny feet.

This is the nightly scene when Robert comes home from work.

Festus is inside the backpack so he is included.

All the dogs get individual attention.

Poppy is barking her head off.  Then he loads them all into the

small Volkswagon.  They walk on the beach for hours.  Sometimes

Festus joins them. Robert says Festus meows loud all the way to the

beach and while they are hiking on the beach.

I drove the van to the dealership in Ellsworth, Maine, Darlings.

They had a rental car for me but could not guarantee the cost would be covered by

the dealership.  They said the transmission part failed.  They will look for engine issues

as well.  I had asked them to check the engine when the van was under full warranty.

Now that the warranty is expired they are going to check the engine.  It does not look like

this new work on the transmission will be covered.  I am shaking my head.  I can not believe

a dealership would not stand behind a transmission they rebuilt with only 12,000 miles of use.

I am going to stay home and paint.  They will not be able to even look at my van until after October

20th because they are very busy.  The 2017 Promaster Ram 2500 only has 62, 305 miles of use.

The transmission first went out when the van had 49,500 miles, under warranty.  I think the power

train warranty is good for 60,000 miles.  I need to check.  Maybe it is 100,00 miles.

I am keeping a good attitude.  Good night.

October 5, 2021 Two Days Ago I Was Thinking, Do I Paint Better In Studio or Plein Air? The Answer...

Festus often is seen sitting inside of his kitty backpack when he wants to go outside!

Unless it is dark outside usually he gets to go.  One of us takes him.

He is a spoiled little kitty.

I was thinking two days ago whether I painted better plein air or in my studio.

I had just filled up my van with 75$ of gas that would last me a week.

If I stayed in my studio to paint I would save a lot of money each month.

I was pondering this when the next day my van's transmission went out 12,000 miles after

a new transmission was put into the van!  Well now the decision of painting in my studio

has been made for me!  I will be having my van towed to the dealership for a new transmission.

Rental cars are rare.  I will be painting in my studio.  No choice!  It usually takes

a month or more to have a new transmission put in the van.

My life has been very interesting lately.  The van will be fixed.

I drove to Lake Alamoosook to hang a few sheets on a clothesline.

I was the only person there.  No one was there to ask me any questions!

I photographed the white sheets for a while!  I drove to Stonington.

I did not get to paint because my van's transmission started to fail. I was

very lucky to get home!

I saw a few pumpkins at the door steps in Stonington.

I never noticed this house before until there was a pumpkin.

There is a lot of Fall color.  Good night.

October 4, 2021 Painting An Oil on Copper Painting. The Underpainting.

I am working on writing a book about painting with oils on copper.

I am starting to take photos for this book.

This is just one way I start an oil on copper painting.

The most important thing about painting the darks: The darks need to be connected for a better design.

In the book I will describe more about this process.  There are so many benefits.

Here are a series of photos to show how I paint the value underpainting.

I am using only two colors for this value underpainting.

Cadmium Red Light and Cobalt Blue.

The reason I have chosen these two colors is because they are the most

opaque and dark of the four colors I use.

I do not want to introduce other colors to my palette for an underpainting.

I add a little Titanium White to the Cadmium Red Light and Cobalt blue to lighten the values.

I have discovered one brand of Titanium White that seems to work best on copper.

Not every brand of Titanium White is the same.  There are large differences.

I have started to work on the lightest lights.

I wanted to paint them before the other lights.

Now the underpainting is finished.

I will allow the painting to dry before I work with all four colors.

This gives me a dry surface to work on further.

I have worked on the design and mood.

The color will be the next important step to complete this painting.

Here is another finished underpainting size 8x10.   This painting has the addition of many crows.

I had an idea of painting a series of them long ago before the SD card was lost.  I wanted to add crows.

Now I will paint the 14x20 on my easel.

Festus was playing with a toy.  Lady Violet was watching.

Since the temperatures are getting colder, Festus spends more time in my lap, getting warmed up!

He uses his feet to knead for a while.

Festus loves to dig his long nails into my fleece jacket!

There were crows flying around in the field.

Good night.

October 3, 2021 Found A Lost SD Card That Revealed Much Wanted Photos!

A few days ago I was thinking it was too bad I did not have someone take a photo of

my friend Deborah and I together.  A few days later I was searching through my computer images

for more snow on pumpkins at a farm in Maine to paint.  I have painted three paintings

of that scene I saw as I was driving to Vermont.  I looked but did not find any on my computer.

On Saturday Robert was dismantling my old recliner to bring to the dump.  He came inside

with a lost SD card!  I put the card into my computer to find three photos of Deborah and I taken

by her husband.  I found all of the snow on the pumpkin photos!  I found photos of my Mom and

Dad.  I sat there shocked!  What a gift!

Here is one of the images.  I spent the rest of the day drawing many different scenes

of the snow on the pumpkins with the farm house in the distance.  I may work on a series

of paintings.  I have two compositions drawn out now.  One is a 8x10.  One is a 14x20.

I suppose I have gotten back into painting.

During a life span of painting there are trials and tribulations.

Family illnesses, injuries, tragedies, fatalities, friends passing away, dogs passing away,

covid, lack of funds, lack of painting supplies, spouse issues are some of the things that will stop a painter from

working.  One of the things can be an issue with housing.  Sometimes the house falls apart.

Sometimes the house just becomes unlivable!  Sometimes the house is destroyed in a fire.

It is common for an artist to step back during these times.  Sometimes it is permanent.  Sometimes

it is for a few weeks.  I have always painted since I was four years old.  I have a feeling I will always be

painting until I physically can not do so.  I enjoy painting for the most part.  The larger paintings

can be very difficult.  I am exhausted after finishing a large painting.  But boy are they exciting to look at

when they are finished!  I do not think there is anything else like viewing a well done large painting!  The feeling

of mastering it!  The art patron's reaction to a large painting is something to behold.  I will work on smaller and medium

sized paintings for awhile.  I will make things easy for myself.

Good night.

"The Dance" 20x26 oil on copper  Sold. Thanks.

I am very lucky to have found and excellent collector to purchase this painting.

Festus put on the show of his life for us all during their visit.

He was dashing around and escaped twice in the backyard while they were here!

They took me out to lunch and we ate at the beach.  It was a very nice day.

I am so appreciate of their company and purchases.

Robert has Festus in the backpack ready to walk in the backyard.

Tonight Robert, Festus in his backpack, and all four dogs came back inside.

He said Festus had a very exciting time outside.  He said there was a black and white

long haired cat on the other side of the fence.  The cat came within 10 feet of Festus who

was inside of his backpack of course.  We have smelled a cat in our backyard before.

I have heard a cat meow in our backyard at night while Festus was on my lap!

I think Festus has an admirer!

Poppy is an admirer of Festus.  She often cuddles up with him.  She even cleans Festus!

Lady Violet has been carrying around this panda toy for many days.

She doesn't let any other dog have the toy.  She will let me look at it.

Festus has been seen watching Lady Violet play with this toy.

We are having roofers come to give us quotes!  Time for a new roof!

I am going to pay for half of the roof.  Very exciting!

There are many leaks that smell of mold in the house.

Monet is taking antibiotics for Anaplasmosis.  Lily had Anaplasmosis

last year and was treated so they did not give her more antibiotics even

though she tested positive.  I am thinking about having a blood panel done

on Lily to make sure her numbers are ok.  She could have been reinfected

with Anaplasmosis this year.  Anaplasmosis is deadly if not treated.

I admired this scarecrow lady.

Good night.
