May 30, 2020 Wonderful Gift Of Plein Air Painting In Maine! Witnessed a Bee Swarm!

"Hard Working Ladies" 5x7 oil on copper sold.Thanks.

I live close to Wrights Apple Orchard in Bucksport, Maine.

I visited today.  I knew they had hired a few beehives to be placed on their property.

The bees help to pollinate the apple trees.

I decided to sit inside my van to paint.

I took a couple of photos of the painting process.

It is always fun to see the photo of what an artist is painting!

It almost looked like a tonalist painting of greens.

I decided to push color temperature to give it the strong feeling of Spring light!

I started to realize there might be an issue the the apple trunks hitting the tops of the beehive.

Solved this issue of the tree trunks.  I wanted that grass to glow so I used pure

Cadmium Yellow light!

I decided I didn't like the color of my background.

I added purples to the background instead.

I added more white blossoms to the trees.

Painting the bees was fun.

I had finished the painting.  The smell of honey was very strong and beautiful.

I noticed a louder buzzing sound.  I looked up to see bees flying in a large tubular circle!

I stood by them and watched.

The bees were up so high!

Here is a close up of the bees flying in a circle.

"Little Gothic Cottage" 5x7 oil on copper 350$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping is included in the price.

I went out to paint yesterday in Bucksport.  I found this cottage to paint.

I was rewarded with the wonderful aroma of Lilacs!

I love Spring in Maine.  It is my favorite time of the year.

"White Pitcher of Sunflowers and Forget Me Nots" 14x10 white ink,

Daniel Smith and Fine Tec pearlescent watercolors on black stonehenge watercolor

paper.  100$ includes shipping.

I worked on this watercolor last night.

I used six layers of white watercolor to make it very light!

Good night.

May 28, 2020 I Painted A Mansard Roof Home In Orrington, Maine Today Plein Air.

"First Day Of Summer" 5x7 oil on copper Sold.  Thanks.

I have been thinking of painting this mansard roof beauty large for many days.

I took many photos of it a few days ago.  I studied them at home.

I needed to do a sketch of it on location-Plein Air!

The house has been vacant for several years.

A lady once lived in this house.

There are a few of her personal belongings outside the home.

A light is still on.

What a beautiful house.  I know she was happy here.

She had white little daffodils growing.  There was a fushia Lilac Tree.

She grew little pink flowers.  A few trees have grown up against the house.

She had two clothesline in her front yard.

I sat inside my van with the door open.  I liked the shade the van provide but I really liked how high up

in the air I was situated.  I was thinking, "Why am I painting it so small?  It is much more difficult!"

I just want to do a study so I could paint it larger.  I added laundry to the line.

I also turned a tree into a blooming cherry tree.  I painted dandelions and other flowers.

I wanted to make this pretty house enchanting to look at.

I think the lady would be delighted.

The house is in need of repair. I do not think it will be standing long.

Monet and Poppy were enjoying great weather this morning!

Forget Me Nots and Dandelions in my yard.

Good night.

May 27, 2020 Painting, Putting A Dress On A Dog, Having Fun with Watercolors.

"Yellow Pitcher with Sunflowers and Forget Me Nots" 14x10 white gel ink with

fine tec pearlescent and daniel smith watercolors on black stonehenge watercolor paper.

sold.  Thanks.

I was painting this today!

What was Lady Violet doing?

She took a roll of paper towels.  I took it back and gave her the cardboard insert.

She was so pleased!

There is no yelling or saying no, just an exchange of something she can chew up!

Monet was pleased. He keeps an eye out for Lady Violet.  He loves her.

We all love her.

I put a denim dress on Lady Violet just for fun.

I was so surprised to hear Monet barking at me and Robert saying, "Oh that is not right!"

Here is Monet barking his head off!  Look at the victim!

Robert to the rescue!  "Don't worry Lady Violet!"

Monet looked pleased.  "Save her from the dress!"

Lady Violet, "Oh I don't know what she did to me?"

Oh brother!

This is the Isabey quill watecolor brush I use.

You can see the black stonehenge watercolor paper with a bit of a chalk drawing.

Here is the still life.  I took out a sunflower and placed it at the bottom

after I thought I was finished.  I am glad I did this.  I also decided to add more

forget me nots to fill out the space.

"Great Expectations" 20x26 oil on copper is finished after some tweaking!

1850$ framed in your choice of gold or black frame.  Shipping is included in the price.

I thought this was a cat!  I looked at the animal in my camera lens to discover a groundhog!

I had a good laugh.  Good night.

May 23, 2020 Red Haired Beauty Hanging Vintage Aprons On Clothesline Painting Almost Done!

"Great Expectations" 20x26 oil on copper 1850$ framed in your choice of gold or black.  Shipping is

free.

Finished!

Here is the painting on my easel!

I took the painting to Lake Alamoosook today.

It was very exciting putting up my easel.

I used the Takeiteasel for painting larger works.

It is a great easel for painting in windy situations.

I worked on the painting for several hours.

The one thing that surprised me:  The scene was so much warmer in the birch tree.

I used pure Cadmium Yellow Light to achieve the correct color of the backlit birch tree leaves.

I painted dandelions.

Here is the Takeiteasel.  It is made in the USA.

Here is the painting before I went to sleep last night.

Two o'clock in the morning is my self imposed curfew from late night painting.

It is so quiet in the house late at night.  I do like to paint at night!

During the day my house could be confused with a dog race track.

Here is the painting after I painted the ground.

I painted the shadows a purple because I wanted them to read as a shadow.

Here it is before I painted the sky, distant land, and birch tree, and ground.

I looked over every inch of the painting softening edges, taking brush hairs off the painting,

and adding a few highlights.  It is done!  Craftsmanship is important.

All four goldens are enjoying the backyard shade!

We play every morning for an hour.  Robert had our yard sprayed for ticks.

There are too many tick borne illnesses to take a chance.

The bug spray they used it suppose to be environmentally friendly..except for the bugs.

I do feel bad about using bug spray but some of these illnesses can be dangerous.

Good night!

May 22, 2020 Painting A Red Haired Beauty Hanging Laundry At Lake Alamoosook!

I met a family at Lake Alamoosook while I was hanging my vintage aprons on a clothesline.

They allowed their fourteen year old girl to pose for a painting.

I have started on the painting. It will be a 20x26 oil on copper painting.

Robert suggested she needed to be wearing a dress.

I agreed.  She will look very classy.

She was wearing jean shorts with a swimsuit top.  This was so cute.

The painting will most likely be hanging in a wonderful bedroom or living room.

I loved how she looks in the dress!

I decided on a white dress with a low ruffle.

Close up shot.  I will work more on this after the rest of the painting

is finished.

She was wearing gold toe sandals.  Love toe sandals!

I knew the vintage aprons would be fun to paint!

Now I am blocking in where the pine and birch tree foliage will be.

I like to paint deep blues and purples where the greens will appear later.

It give depth to the foliage.

The lighter blues will be the sky holes in the trees later.

Lady Violet ate the back of my boot even though Monet growled at her to stop.

She also stole my favorite socks and tore up the toe area.

She has been very good.  These are just typical puppy activities.

Poppy and Lady Violet look like twins.  It is very hard to tell them apart!

We have leaves on the trees!  Weather is warming!

Spring is here!  Good night.

May 20, 2020 I have been busy Painting Watercolors On Black Paper!

"Spring Flowers Blooming" 14x10 white gel ink, daniel smith and fine tec pearlescent watercolors

on Black stonehenge watercolor paper.  Sold.  Thank you.

I remember being rather nervous painting on black watercolor at first.

I didn't have any idea how it would turn out.  I started with the white gel ink to

draw the flowers.  Then I used White watercolor with various colors to paint the flowers.

I painted many layers to achieve an opaque look.  Some areas are transparent whereas some

areas are opaque. I like the contrast.  I think watercolors might be brighter than gouache.

The fine tec pearlescent watercolors are used last.  I like to use just a few colors to add shimmer

to the painting.  The black paper is covered with the black sparkling paint.  Some of the flower areas

are left a mat finish without the pearlescent watercolors.  I never know how one will turn out.

It is a big surprise.  The larger watercolors, 14x10 take me five to six hours to complete.  The smaller

watercolors, 7x5, take me an hour or two to complete.

"Spring Flowers To Remember" 14x10 sold. Thanks.

I have been creating bouquets of flowers from my yard!

"Spring Flowers" 14x10 watercolor.  Sold.  Thanks.

"Zinnia Party" 7x5 watercolor  Sold.  Thanks.

I used Aqua Ink Yellow first to coat a piece of Strathmore hot press watercolor.

I let this wash dry.  Then I drew the flowers with a black ink pen.  I used daniel smith

and fine tech watercolors to paint.  I like the yellow background.  The yellow ink created

an interesting texture.

Here is Lady Violet as a puppy.  I would recognize that look anywhere!  She is so wise.

Lady Violet and her Grandparents were playing hard!

Monet loves to bump a stuffed animal on to her head to taunt her.

Poppy likes to bark.  That is her way of playing.

Lily was watching all the action.

Ted and Milo stopped by to say, " Hello".

Ted is so happy with Milo.

Ted thanked me for rescuing Milo, taking him to the vet, and having Milo neutered.

He said Milo is the very best dog.  He said he would not know what to do without Milo.

It was the first time Ted thanked me for Milo.

I am glad it all worked out.

Milo is such a happy healthy dog!

Here are a few bouquets.

Good night!

May 13, 2020 New Oil Painting On My Easel. Vintage Full Aprons On A Clothesline!

I started a new oil on copper painting of vintage full aprons and a white sheet.

First I studied many photos of the clothesline.  I drew many of these images.

I finally decided to paint!

I drew the composition first.

I ordered the vintage aprons on ebay to paint!

They are so colorful and wonderful!

I chose this image because of how the fabric edges curled up and down.

I started on the water trying so hard to keep it all very light.

I realized one of the reasons I loved this image was the counter change going on in the design.

The dark pine needles behind the sheet make the folds stand out.

The aprons stand out because they are dark against the light water.

I didn't notice this when I selected the image.

I am sure this counter change in the design made stronger.

Here is the finished painting.  Sold.  Thank you!

"Dancing In The Wind" 20x26 oil on copper

"Promise Of The Wind" 20x26 oil on copper.  sold. Thank you.

I heard strange noises while I was painting.

Lady Violet had gathered some items from the upstairs bathroom trash can!

She had a little box that once held soap, dental floss, and a large dust ball.

She was busy tearing up the box!

She looked a bit guilty.

I told her "Good girl!"

I was pleased she chose trash instead of something treasured!

I loved the look on her face.  I just laughed.

The weather has been wonderful!

This is the view from our backyard looking at the East Penobscot Channel.

Loons are vocal at night.  I love their call that seems to echo off of the spruce trees.

Daffodils are blooming.  This is the view of our neighbor's houses.

The red small building is my tiny house!

I use the tiny house to store all of my Sketch-N-Can supplies and easels.

This is the view of the backyard, dogs, airstream, and house.

Good night!

This one is heading to an operator of a large museum in the South.

Grandfather Monet is best friends with his Granddaughter Lady Violet.

I like to watch Lady Violet cleaning Monet's face.  He closes his eyes and allows her to

clean him up!  They play hard together in the backyard.

Lady Violet took my cell phone a few days ago.

I saw her trying to take something outside.  She dropped it a few times before she

ran down the stairs.  I thought it was a dog toy.  We have searched all over the car, house,

and yard for my cell phone.  No luck!   I have even asked Lady Violet nicely to bring me

my phone.  She is keeping the location of the phone a secret.  I have finally ordered a new

phone.  Problem is solved!

Lady Violet brought me a tube of toothpaste as I came out of my bedroom

this morning.  She is a very smart dog.  I told her thank you very much.

She knows I brush my teeth as soon as I wake up!

Monet is very playful.

Have a good night!  Happy Mother's Day!  Mother's are so very special.

May 6, 2020 My Intent Was To Make The Painting Into a Maine Charming Summer Day.

I placed this 2017 plein air sketch on to my easel today.

I had painted this painting on High Street at Ocean Point.

I remember thinking, "Wow this is such a charming street scene!"

I remember a man in a car pulling over, coming up to my van's window.

I was sitting inside of my van painting so seeing his face surprised me!

I remember letting out a scream..not too loud.

His wife had seen my signage on my van.  She looked up my website while they were driving around.

He wanted to know if I still had a painting she wanted.  I actually had the painting framed in the van!

I handed him the painting.  I took down the credit card information, blew them a kiss, and continued to paint!

I captured the light but I had not painted the architecture correctly.

I remember wishing there was a field of flowers in the foreground on the left.

Today I made it all happen!

First I changed the direction of the light.

This was sort of a brave thing to do.

I needed that white house to be a brighter white!  The sun needed to be behind me shinning on the house.

I had to change the shadows.  I completely repainted the entire painting.

I added a lady walking a dog.  Made the schooner's sails brighter.

Then I had a great time painting a field of flowers.  I imagined daisies, lupines, and red poppies.

"High Street At Ocean Point" 5x7 oil on copper 350$ framed in gold or black with gold.

free shipping.

I am pleased with myself for changing the light and attempting to paint a wild flower field.

What an improvement.  I didn't have anything to lose.

The painting could only be improved!

Lady Violet likes to clean her Mom's face and her Grandfather Monet's face too.

I have not seen her cleaning Poppy's face.  Poppy will not allow me to give

her a bath.  Maybe she doesn't like Lady Violet to clean her either!

Lily has a difficult time keeping track of her red cap!

The apple trees will be blooming in a few weeks!

I have promised myself to paint every apple tree I encounter!

Good night.

"Gentle Breeze" 14x20 oil on copper 950$ framed in your choice of a frame and free shipping.

I have been hard at work painting the white sheets at Lake Alamoosook!

I have been working at home using a plein air sketch as a guide for the color.

I think I have done enough white sheet clothesline paintings for now.

What will I paint next?  I will give it much thought!

"Two White Daffodils" 5x7 watercolor on strathmore hot press paper 30$ free shipping.

I have continued to do small watercolors.  All the paintings are located at the top of this page

under the Painting heading. Take a look!  Paintings make great Mother's Day gifts.

"Zinnia Hearts" 7x5 watercolor on strathmore hot press paper.  30$ includes shipping.

It is fun designing and painting these florals.

I never know how they will look!  Surprising sometimes!

"Wild Flower Bouquet" 5x7 oil on copper 350$ framed in gold.  Shipping is included.

Oil paintings cost me a hundred times more than painting a watercolor.  The time it takes is greater too.

I enjoy painting watercolors and oils.

"Crowd of Daffodils" 5x7 watercolor.  not available for sale.

I am sending this watercolor to my Mom for Mother's Day!

She helped me memorize my first poem, "Daffodils" by William Wordsworth.

I was in fourth grade.  I remember being very stressed out about having to stand up in class

and recite this poem!  I had never memorized a thing.  My Mom helped me work through this.

We continued the poem memorizing for years afterwards.  She would give me a reward.

I had a selections of rewards.  I liked the baby dill pickle jars, packages of sunflower seeds, and

candy the best!  I do remember "Daffodils" still.  I believe memorizing poems helped me

in college.  My Dad, my Brother Jim, and I played games of chess after dinner.  I know this helped

me think.  Thanks to my parents for their efforts!  Maybe this might inspire someone.

"Home Is Where The Heart Is" 5x7 oil on copper 350$ framed in gold.  Free shipping.

Lady Violet is doing great!  She thinks she is all grown up now.

If she chews on the woodwork or the piano, I walk over to her, she walks to the kitchen, and

puts herself in time out!  I pretend to close the dutch door.  She looks sad.  Then I let her out and

tell her she is a good girl!  This seems to be working great!

She waits downstairs sleeping on her back while I paint late into the evening.

Then she walks up the stairs with my just like Lily once did.

Lily told Lady Violet to do this so Lily could go to bed early.

I do miss Lily being with me at night.  She goes to sleep with Robert and Poppy at 8:30pm.

I photographed yellow daffodil vintage sheets at the beach.

I will paint the images someday!

Good night!

It was very very windy!
