I met Helen St. Clair today at the last event for the Stroke Of Art plein air event.
When she heard I painted with oils on copper, her eyes lit up, she smiled, and
said, "Oh that sounds like so much fun to paint on copper!" I decided to give her a
11x14 copper panel wrapped in plastic. She was so pleased. I wished her luck
painting on copper. I told her I would love to paint with her someday!
Within a few hours, I found myself at Helen St. Clair's oceanfront home, painting
her view! Helen's Daughter and I set up a painting station for Helen.
I put my large green umbrella up to shade Helen.

Helen St. Clair had never painted on copper before. I handed her a large Old Holland
flat kolinsky brush to use on copper. We lost the first brush I handed her somewhere...
Luckily I had another large kolinsky brush with me! She loved painting on copper.
I asked her if she would like to try a medium with the oil for the copper? She said, "Sure,
what do you have?" I put some Gamblin's Neo Meglip on her palette. Soon she said she
loved the medium and the brush and the copper! She said she could get use to painting on
copper. We had a great time. She asked me what day it was. I told her I had no idea.
Then I said I often do not know what day it is because I paint everyday! She laughed.

I didn't ask Helen very many questions. She was so intent on painting. She had not painted
in a very long time. I could not imagine her not painting for years. It seemed difficult for her
to start to paint at first. She wanted to travel to another place to paint because she looked at
her view all the time. I told her we should paint a sailboat. There were plenty of sailboats
tacking back and forth. She agreed. I suggested we just have fun and throw some paint around.
She smiled and agreed. I thought she did such a great job on her painting.
I wished I had asked her what her colors of oil paint she used. I could tell one color was Naples Yellow,
possibly an Indian Red, and Prussian Blue. We couldn't find her Titanium White but before she
had a chance I squirted some white on her palette!

We were both enjoying ourselves so much today. I told her it was a lot of fun to paint with
a great painter. I made sure to stay two hours so Helen would not get tired.

"Sailing" 11x14 oil on copper. 475$ framed in gold or black with gold.
Here is my painting efforts in Helen St. Clair's backyard!
She asked me where I had the idea to paint so many sailboats in one painting?
I told her I didn't know. She giggled. She said it looked like a happy painting.
She suggest I paint a few people navigating the sailboats. I had ghost sailboats!
I painted in a few people. Then she suggested I paint a trail of light behind the boat.
I painted one in front but then she said behind and told me to look at one.
She said she liked the sailboat in the upper left hand side best.
I was grateful for her comments. I loved her painting.

Here is Helen St. Clair's painting. She said it was not done but Wow what a beautiful painting.
Her limited palette, incredible design, and lovely brushstrokes were great.
She loved hearing my thoughts about her painting. I could tell it made her very happy.
Her Daughter was pleased. She thanked me. I told her to make sure to frame that painting!
I was given a beautiful gift of a watercolor print by Helen before I left.
I hope to paint with Helen St. Clair again soon. Thank you.
It was a day to remember. I have been a fan of Helen St. Clair's work for years.

What a welcome I received when I came home!

Lily climbed into my lap and buried her head under my arm. She missed me.
Monet did the same thing after Lily left my lap! Poppy was dodging back and forth
and jumping up. Great to be home!
I was so pleased with the Stroke of Art event in Boothbay. Great people and great artists.
I ended up selling 11 paintings and receiving 1 commission! Thanks. Good night.
