Friday, October 30, 2009 Watercolor painting for today!

  "Bass Harbor"  5x7 Watercolor

I took Daisy and Duke my two golden retrievers to Sears Island.  An Island no cars can travel on!  A sanctuary of sorts for people and pets.  We hiked for a few miles down stonewall lined carriage trails made by settlers of the past.  Then Daisy and Duke swam in the 40 degree ocean.  I threw a stick for them.  We were so tired when we came home.  They took a nap.  I was too tired to paint.  Luckily somedays I paint more than one painting.  Here is a watercolor!  Have a great day!

Thursday, October 29, 2009 Cadillac Mountain Painting of the day!

" Cadillac Mountain View of Blue Hill"   11X14 Oil on Copper   Framed in carved pale gold wood.

Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is a beautiful place at anytime of the day!  I painted this from the computer monitor!  I painted in my car at Cadillac Mountain so I was familar with the color of the sky.  Last night I was reading Emile Gruppe's book on Painting.  He wrote when you have a lot of orange, reds, and purples in the landscape the sky looks almost always green!  Wow!  He was right!  I sat there shaking my head.  How amazing I would just open his book and start reading this!  I love to open either Emile Gruppe or Richard Schmid's Books to see what I might read.  I have learned lots about painting from these too great Artists!   I may start trying to use the palette knife for highlights!  Seems like most really good Artists use the palette knife!  This painting is of a spectacular view!  The mountain on the left is Sargent Mountain.  The mountain on the right fartherest away is Blue Hill.  Eagle lake is to the right of Sargent Mountain.  I guess Blue Hill Bay is infront of Blue Hill.
I am going to paint again on Cadillac Mountain today!  Of course I will be painting in my car!  Nice sunny day!  Have a great day!

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 Another Oil on Copper painting of Acadia!

"Autumn at Cadillac Mountain"  6X8 Oil on Copper  Framed in Pale Gold Wood.  Shipped for Free!

I had a great day on top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.  It was about 40 degrees with winds so great my car was shaking at times!  I sat inside of my car to paint this painting at about 4:00 pm almost at sunset now.  I think the land on the left is Lamoine Beach.  A cloud just floated by so I painted it in quickly.  I decided not to do anything with this clouds because it looked so fresh.  The colors of Cadillac Mountain were beautiful plums, golds, and tans.  The sky was such a beautiful clear light green.  There were many tourists getting out to see the view.  People noticed I was painting inside of my car and couldn't resist communicating with me.  I nodded or smiled.  This painting turned out pretty nice.  I like this 6X8 size.  I am waiting on a copper order.  Supply is getting low!  Have a Great Day!

"Clearing Fog"  3X4 Oil on Copper
I was driving in Bass Harbor when I noticed this scene unfold.  I took photos of the fog lifting and the extremely bright sun glaring on the ocean.  So here I took artistic license with my photo to achieve the memory of the scene.  I love to paint water and trees.  This is a strong image for such a small painting.  It will look great in a gold ornate frame!
Have a great day!  I am going to Acadia National Park to paint.

Monday, October 26, 2009 A miniature! Ann R Kittery and Pea Pod!

"Ann R Kittery and Pea Pod"  3X4  Oil on Copper

I sat in my car in Rockport at sunset because it was 50 degrees.  I can see this painting in the car is going to be a help and a habit.  I enjoy painting boats.  I was hoping to study those boat stands.  I have painted a boat yard before from a photo but ran into trouble trying to paint the boat stands.  So now I know how the stands are shaped.  I learn so much from painting outside.  I have noticed my paintings done outdoors are more colorful, more looser brush strokes, and fresher.  I liked the shape  and colors of this old wooded boat called the Ann R Kittery.  I hope to paint a larger painting of this scene soon.
I was just invited to attend the 4th Annual Wekiva Paint Out Invitational in Wekiva State Park in Orlando, Florida on March 1-6.  This will be a great event.  They house all of the Artists at a Camp nearby.  The Artists will paint all day for five days.  At the end of this five days they will have an Art Show. They have contests for the Artist's paintings such as smallest painting, or the most paintings painted, largest painting with prizes too!  I hope to be able to learn some new tricks from all of the excellent Artists attending.  I was also invited to three other Plein Aire Invitationals in Florida.  I did agree to do Wekiva's.  I signed up for the biggest Plein Aire event in America besides Carmel called Plein Aire Easton.  Easton's Plein Aire event is amazing.  They have hosts to look after each Artists for housing and food and car!  The event is in Easton, Maryland.  I met a director of the event while painting on Monhegan Island!  It seems to be a small world when it concerns Plein Aire Artists.  I hope you have a great day!  I am off to the YMCA and then I will paint!

"The Trees at the Great Meadow"  3X4

Yesterday it was raining all day and very dark outside.  I decided to drive to Acadia National Park to Park Loop Road.  I sat in my drivers seat with my easel braced against the steering wheel and painted this painting!  I had so much fun!  I was so comfortable!  I had Mozart playing on the radio.  I kept the wind shield wipers on.  I used my passengers seat to hold my brushes!  I could have painted there all day!  The benefits of painting inside the car were impressive!  I may do this all Winter long!  Have a great day!

Saturday, October 24, 2009 Painting of the Great Meadow on Park Loop Road!

"Early Autumn at the Great Meadow"  8X10 Oil on Copper

The Great Meadow on Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park is a beautiful place to visit.  I like to come here at different times of the day to see the changes of the light.  This painting was a view at about 10:00 am.  The mountains are lighter.  The mountains become darker blues and purples later in the evening.  I usually sit here quietly hoping to see the giganitic beaver who lives here.  I see the evidence the large trees she knaws and takes down.  Some trees were so large she just abandons.  She is doing a great job at keeping the meadow free of trees.  The photograph of this painting is not great.  There are more translucent darks on the left side of the pond.  I may work a little more on this painting.

It is almost 1 pm and very dark outside.  It has been raining lightly all day.  I think I will go out for a drive!  Get some inspiration!  Have a great day!

"Ode to George"  4x6 Pen and Ink with Watercolor

"Thinking of George Sotters"  4X6 Pen and Ink with Watercolor

There were really fun to do!  I buy these Strathmore Watercolor Cards from an online Art Store by the hundred for 23.00 dollars.  Then I search on the internet for my favorite Artist.  Today I looked up George Sotters.  Then I picked a painting to draw out with my archival Micron 03 Ink Pen.  I changed the whole painting by moving the building and trees around to make the image my own.  I also changed the medium he used from oil to pen and ink watercolor.  I always pick a deceased Artist.  Then I use my Winsor Newton Artist Watercolors and paint my watercolor.  I can use them as a card or frame them.  I am going to make prints to sell.  They will be each 4.00$ or all 4 for 12.00$.  They might make a nice Christmas Card!  It is a cool sunny day!  I love it when the sun shines!   Have a Great Day!

Thurday, October 22, 2009 A Boat Painting for today!

"Another Maine Day"  6X8 Oil on Copper    Sold.  Thanks.

This little boat is one of my favorites.  It is just an ordinary skiff located in Bass Harbor at Rich's Wharf.  I am not sure how many times I have painted this particular boat!  The boat is now very familar to me.  It seems as if what inside the skiff is important to me and not so much the reflection.  I have often thought the way we paint a boat has some psychological meaning.  I like to paint these boats tied up to a wharf.  I also like to have as much calm water surrounding the boat as possible.  I sometimes let the piling at the wharf show in the painting.  Most of the time I like to show the boat floating in peaceful waters.  This is a nice peaceful painting!

It is another gloomy day here in Maine!  Cool too!  Might go out and do some pen and ink with watercolors from the view of my car!  Have a great day!

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Painting of Bucksport!

"Three Church Steeples"  6X8  Oil on Copper  Framed in pale gold wood.

I started this painting on a cold day at the Fort in Bucksport.  I carried all of the art equipment to a great spot overlooking the Penobscot East Channel with the town of Bucksport in view.  I started drawing on my copper with a Sepia colored drawing pen.  But I was so cold I packed it up and ran to my car!  It was about 40 out with an ocean breeze.  I didn't have my coat or hat or gloves.  No wonder I didn't make it even twenty minutes.  So I used my computer monitor again to paint this painting.  It was difficult.  I nearly gave up so many times.  My hands were so cold, and I didn't have any brush control.  I turned the heater on and a few minutes later my hands warmed up.  It is difficult painting buildings.  Especially so many little tiny buildings.  I kept on telling myself as soon as I had the little buildings finished, the rest of the painting would be fun!  I painted in a man walking a large black dog.  There is also a family walking.  Bucksport now has a waterfront park so there are many people walking about.  I like the three different church steeples.  Since I am opening up an Art Gallery called Lammers Gallery in June of 2010 here in Buckport, I thought I should have a few Bucksport paintings.  There are not any other Galleries in Bucksport.

Daisy looks like she had a hold on poor Duke!  I can not imagine only having one Golden Retriever.  There are always playing together.  They get along great!  They never fight.  If they get too rough with each other, Duke will clean Daisys face.  They always are the best of friends.  Have a great day!  We have sun today!  Exciting!

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 Painting of Deuverex Cove Road!

"Deuverex Cove Road"  8x10 Oil on Copper

  Daisy and Duke's Daily Ritual

Our new house!  Nice to have a house after camping here in Maine for two years!

Deuverex Cove Road is off of US Route 1 near Sandy Point.  I have driven by this Road a few times and noticed how beautiful it is.  Finally at 4:30 pm ,which is almost sunset now in Maine, I took photos.  Looked like a nice Autumn scene to paint.
We were lucky to have sun yesterday after weeks of cloudy and rainy weather.  Today is another gloomy day.  The lack of sun here in Maine is a bit of a problem.  It is very easy to not do anything! In the morning after I take care of Daisy and Duke, I have my tea.  Usually I watch Diasy and Duke's daily ritual.  They always make me smile. There are many variations to their ritual but they always end the  ritual the same.  This photo is the end of their ritual!  Duke's tail is always in Daisy's face!  Have a great day!

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"  3X4
"Dave's Lobster"  A Lobster Candy Dish

I had taken a one day break from painting on Sunday.  I am feeling better!  Had a touch of a cough.  Probably was chilled from painting this week outside.  "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is a fun little pumpkin painting I painted from a photo.  It sure is a lot more fun and better to paint outside.  There is so much more color outside in the pumpkin field.
Dave's Lobster is a plastic candy dish.  Dave was hoping I could paint the dish to look like a live lobster.  I used a live real lobster as a model.  I just turned the platter with the lobster around as I needed to.  Now I am going to wait till it dries and paint it with a product called Galkyd.  This is the only lobster candy dish I will do!  It was fun though to do something different.
I am going to the YMCA to workout!  Then I am painting outside.  I may try to paint from inside of my car.   I will heat up the car going to the location, climb into the back.  I just need to make sure my car windows are cleaned!  Have a great day!

Saturday, October 17, 2009 Painting the Beehive on Sandbeach!

"View From Sand Beach Plein Air"  3X4 Oil on Copper $100

"The Beehive" 3X4 Oil on Copper $100

" Mums and Pumpkins"  6X8 Oil on Copper 200$

Yesterday I went to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island.  The Autumn Foliage was peaking.  Everywhere I turned was beautiful.  I finally ended up at Sand Beach.  Most people who visit Sand Beach don't walk to the end of the beach.  At the end of Sand Beach is a beautiful scene looking up at the beehive.  The beehive is the large mountain in the distance where there is an advance hiking trail.  Robert has hiked most trails in Acadia, but not the beehive.  There are ladders to climb and hand rails to aid hikers on this extreme climb.  I liked the colors here on Sand Beach looking up at the Beehive.  It was really cold 41 degrees but there were high winds making the temperatures feel even colder.  It was so cold I had a difficult time talking to tourists about my painting!  My teeth were chattering.  I like to meet people while I am painting.  I don't mind talking to them about why I paint on copper.  Sometimes they become future art collectors!  This is great!  So I painted the first painting of the day using warm colors.  When I returned home for some reason I felt like painting another of the same scene but using cooler colors.  I then fixed "Mums and Pumpkins" deleting the signs and the table in the back on the left.  Now it does look better.  Marge Drew helped me trouble shoot this painting.  Thank you Marge.

I went to the Great Meadow where I often paint.  A beaver had taken down one of the birch trees in the foreground of my painting I did this last week.  Now one of the birch trees is just laying there.  He also worked on a giant tree but was not able to drag it to his house.  He must be an enormous beaver to do so much damage.  Maybe someday I will see him while I am painting.  He is busy keeping the meadow a meadow!   Have a great day!  Thank you for looking.  I appreciate your comments!

Friday, October 16, 2009 Painting of the day! Pumpkins! Mums!

"Pumpkin Time"  3X4 Plein aire sketch!
"Autumn Garden"  3X4  Plein aire sketch!  Oil on Copper

"Mums and Pumpkins"  6X8  Oil on Copper

I was really busy yesterday as you can see here!  I was on my way to Mount Desert Island on Route 3 when I saw this Garden stand with a Pumpkin field!  Wow!  I had been dreaming about painting pumpkins.  So I stopped, asked permission, and started to paint!  I had so much fun.  There are so many colors in a pumpkin you just can not see in any photo!  So in 41 degree temperatures I was painting!  After painting "Pumpkin Time", I started to paint "Autumn Garden".  The owners of the garden stand had thrown old pumpkins and mums in an area of their garden. It is a shame the pumpkins and mums  could not find a good home.  I decided to paint them so many people could appreciate them for years to come!  The oranges in the pumpkins show up great on the copper.  You may be able to notice the copper showing through the paint.   My camera battery was too low to take any more photos.  So I went home, downloaded my photos on my computer, and painted "Mums and Pumkins".
Orange is a vibrant happy color to have in a home.  So the pumpkins on the copper  make a beautiful painting in a house.  I am going back to the garden stand with a recharged battery.  I just can not get enough of pumpkins!  Have a great day!

Thursday, October 15, 2009 Beautiful Tree Painting!

"Nature's Ornaments"  6X8 Oil on Copper  Framed in Pale Gold wood frame and free shipping!

I hiked a mile into Sears Island with my backpack full of equipment.  I had scaled down the equipment so it really wasn't that heavy!  I walked down the old carriage trail lined on both sides with an old stone wall.  I found a nice Spruce tree by the stone wall and decided to paint it!  It was about 46 degrees out and the wind was good!  I was wearing polartec gloves and fleece pants and shirt with a liner too!  I wasn't really cold until after an hour.  The polartec gloves didn't hold up.  I mixed some linseed oil with some of my oil paint to get it to move!  I think I am going to try Richard Schmid's medium made from 5 parts turpentine, 1 part linseed oil, and 1 part varnish.  I never used any medium when I paint usually.  With cold outdoor temperatures I am going to have to use something!  I liked the colors of this painting.  "Nature's Ornaments" was painted in my studio after I came home from painting the same tree outside.  But my outdoor efforts painting really helped me with this painting.  I used my computer monitor of a photo of this tree to look at while I painted.  I like the color scheme and the feeling of this painting.  Instead of painting the blue sky, I painted the sky a warm cream color.  I think introducing a blue would have taken away from all of the golden earth colors.  It has a more Autumn feel to it.  Winslow Homer once said to never ever paint a blue sky.  There are a lot of nice colors an Artist can use for a sky instead of blue.
This is my painting I did at Sear's Island.  It is really small as I knew I would not be able to paint any larger because of the cold temperatures!

"Sears Island Spruce"  3X4 Oil on Copper  (In the Private Collection of the Artist) Painted en plein aire in 45 Degree Temperatures!  Yikes!  It was so cold!  I painted so quickly!  What a beautiful place to paint!  Love these colors!  Really love that stone wall too.  It adds a little history into a natural setting.  Nice thing about painting trees, they are universally recognized, by all ages.  Trees are maybe the most important thing in the world too!  Love trees!  Ok.  Have a great day!  I may go outside to paint again!  The sun is shining.  It is another beautiful Autumn Maine Day!  Need to take advantage of this while I can.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 Sears Island Oak painting today!

"Sears Island Oak"  6X8 Oi on Copper  Sold.  Thanks.  Framed in pale gold wood frame  Price includes frame and shipping!

Sears Island was first called "Wassumkeag" or bright sand beach by Indians.  American Revolution brought squatters to the Island to live.  An American Ship sank in the Harbor and so these squatters fled.  The squatters didn't want to deal with American enemy soldiers.  Job Pendleton first officially settled in 1775.  A man named Peace and six other families settled by 1790.  In 1813 the entire island became a dairy farm owned by the Sears family.  1905 The Bangor and Arrostook Railroad bought the island for a tourist distination but it failed because cars became popular.
There is a carriage road trail through the center of the island through several different habitats.  There are rare bird sighting of warblers and northern parula and norther waterthrush.  There is an old apple tree trail which leads to an old ruin granite basement.  The island is 601 acre area.  There are important unusual habitat areas for wildlife.  Sierra Club has worked hard at preserving this area.  In 1978 the Maine Department of Transportation almost built a cargo terminal on Sears.  They built a causeway to the island without necessary permits.  Finally after 30 years of conflict in 2007 a committee was established to resolve conflicts.  By 2009 there are special restrictions for the conservation easement.
I thought you might like to know some history behind this special place I have been painting.  There is a special feeling about this island.  Maybe it is because no cars travel it's huge highway past the barricades.  Maybe it is the rock carriage trails lined with very old stone walls leading to no real destination.  Maybe it is the possibility of finding old ruins from the first settlers.  You do get the feeling people planted trees and build long extensive stone walls long ago.   Many people love this island and it is a special place.  I would hate to see houses built here!
I am headed out to Sears Island this morning.  Finally Maine is sunny after several days of rain or clouds.   I am going to drink lots of hot tea and bring my polartec gloves!  I may bring my fleece hat too!  It is in the 40's.  Pretty cold for painting outside!  My plan is to hike fast and travel light.  Then I am going to paint quickly and small!
Yesterday when Robert got off work we went to eat at the Hollywood Slots incredible buffet!  It was Robert's birthday!  We had lots of primerib and mussels!  Here is a photo of Robert, Daisy, and Duke last night!  This is a common scene.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 Sears Island Pine Painting!

"Sears Island Pine"  6X8 Oil on Copper  Includes pale gold wood frame and shipping!

Sears Island has the most beautiful trees of all types.  There is also this amazing stone wall that goes on forever.  The rocks are covered in green moss in some areas as in this painting.   I liked how graceful this young tree was.  The fallen tree added contrast with it's beautiful colors.  I liked the fallen oak leaves.  I made sure to make each leaf different.
Normally I take the painting outside in the morning to take a photo of the painting.  This morning is was raining hard!  So I had to take a photo of the painting inside.  I noticed there was more glare this way.  I will probably retake the photo tomorrow if the weather is better.  There is more rich colors on the right side not showing here in the photo.
It is Robert's Birthday today!  Happy Birthday Robert!  I gave him a german chocolate cake last night.  Here is a photo of him trying to eat his cake!  Daisy and Duke seemed also to want a piece!  Robert recieved a Blue Nose Ship model to keep him busy!

Here is another photo on Sears Island.

Monday, Oct 12, 2009 Great Meadow Painting!

" Great Meadow" 6X8 Oil on Copper  Collection of the Artist
The Great Meadow is a beautiful special place I often paint.  It is located on Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park.  Meadows are becoming extinct because of global warning.  Meadows are specialized habitat where certain animals live.  I love to come here to see how the seasons change its colors.  Autumn is  my favorite time to paint here.  There are a row of swamp Maples under the Mountains that are a different color each year.  Usually they are a bright red very early in the season.  The marsh grass turns a beautiful gold and red.  The mountains tend to appear darker the later in the day.  I have noticed the water levels of the marsh are lower this year.  When I painted this painting I increased the water levels so the grasses were still in the water.  I guess when the water is gone then really there will be no more marsh and the animals will move on.  Tree will grow and  there will be another forest.  So I like to paint the Great Meadow to preserve the marsh habitat on Copper!  I tend to paint things that are changing or becoming extinct.  I feel like I am capturing a special moment.  I try to keep colors the same and not try to enhance them.  I enhance the values sometimes to create a more dramatic painting so my main subject will glow.  But I didn't have to enhance the colors for this painting.  I did minimize the number of Birch trees in the foreground so they wouldn't overpower this smaller painting.  I also made the small pond more symmetrical so there would be more balance.  I really do admire more warmer landscape paintings.  There are very few warm landscape paintings.  Most landscapes tend to be cool with an emphasis on blues and greens.
Robert walking on Sears Island with Daisy and Duke

Robert throwing the ball on Sears Island for Daisy and Duke.

Robert and I discovered an amazing place to take your dogs to swim and hike!  Sears Island is owned by the state.  This tranquil island has stone walls and beautiful large oaks and white pines.  We found the remnants of an old granite basement of one of these 1700-1800s year old homes.  The stone walls surround this homestead.  Large rock paths still can be hiked.  The trees here are larger than I have seen here in Maine. There is a wide paved road through the middle of the island to bike or walk on.  Many people bring their dogs to swim and walk off leash.  Other people come just to walk on the nice pavement.  No cars can drive pass the baracades.  It is a beautiful quite place of heaven.

Sunday, October 11, 2009 Ambitous Sail Boat painting!

"For Sail"  11X14 Oil on Copper Panel

I felt very ambitious yesterday! I worked on this painting all day and all night! Literally! I didn't go to sleep until 2:00 am! I am pleased with the results. I really think painting everyday has helped me! My brush control is improving. I hope I can stay motivated to continue to paint everyday. Last week I did take Sunday off. I may think about doing this.
Last night Robert and I cooked a giant pot of mussels and monhagony clams in home made beer, leeks, and butter! What an incredible dinner. I was suprised at how inexpensive mussels and clams are...2.99$ each bag! Love living here in Maine!

I will have this framed in a very beautiful handcarved pale gold wood frame. Price includes frame and shipping! Thank you!

"Amanda and Andrew"  6X8 Oil on Copper Sold!

I am lucky enough to know a nice lady from California named Jewell.  These are her two grandchildren, Amanda and Andrew.  This painting today reflects a day Jewell remembers  spending with here two grandchildren.  Amanda is wearing Jewell's sweatshirt so if you might have been wondering about the little girls dress!  I did use some artistic license with brightening up the forest.  I thought it best to create a happy feeling to go along with Jewell's memory of the occasion.  I hope she is pleased with the results!  I enjoyed doing this painting!  Have a great day!

Friday, October 9, 2009 Monhegan Island Painting of the Day Renee Lammers

"The Rendevous"  8X10 Oil on Copper

When I first saw this scene unfold I was staying at the Eider Duck on Monhegan Island.  I was up on the third floor and looked out the window to see this gleaming white sail!  Then I noticed a lady in a row boat rowing out to the Sailboat!  Then I noticed a man on the sailboat waiting for her.  He had the sails up and he was ready to sail.  Later I discovered the lady's name was Zoey.  She was on the Survivor show.  She was filling in as a lobsterwoman for a man who had suffered a heart attack.  Here she was rowing out to her man on the sailboat.  How romantic!  Probably the real story was, he was her brother for all I know.  I would like to imagine he sailed out to Monhegan to visit her!  Sounds better anyway.
Here is a close up of the sailboat and Zoey rowing.
Thank you for looking!  Have an excellent day!

Thursday, October 8, 2009 The Captain's Chair Monhegan Island Painting of the Day

"The Captain's Chair"  8X10 Oil on Copper  Sold.

The Captain's Chair is behind the Eider Duck house at Fishbeach on Monhegan Island. Local people who live there don't seem to know any story behind this chair. I have seen many paintings of this same chair and each artist calls the chair "The Captain's Chair". I like this chair because someone has tied strings for the back of the chair instead of throwing the chair away. I like the idea of making do! I guess because of my recent economic situation I can really appreciate trying to fix a useful possession to be able to use it still.   The chair has a story to me. How did the back of the chair get broken? So here is Monhegan Island's Old Chair.

Have a Great Day!

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 Painting for today! Golden Retriever Duke

"Painting Duke during Nap Time"  8X10 Oil on Copper  In the private collection of the artist.

I was up in my room with the heater on infront of my easel drawing.  Daisy and Duke came in and started taking their naps.  Duke was laying on my bed sleeping soundly.  I started to draw him with a brown felt tip pen on my sanded copper panel.  I thought he would get up as usual.  I have never been able to paint Duke.  He gets nervous with me staring at him.  Daisy on the other hand is the opposite!  So I decided to try to paint Duke after the drawing was complete.  He opened his eyes a few times and looked very alarmed!  But he would go back to sleep.  Somehow I was able to paint him.  He was behind me so I had to turn around look at him, turn back around paint, and then glance again at him over and over again until I was finished!  Here is a photo I took of him posing for me.  This is a moment when he opened his eyes during his nap to see me staring at him!

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 Painting Plein Aire At Vinalhaven Island

" Plein Aire at Vinalhaven Island "   8X10 Oil on Copper Includes Frame and Shipping!

My trip to Vinalhaven Island was exciting on Monday!  I had to wake up at 5:00 am and then drive an hour to Rockland.  I unloaded my painting equipment and waited for the Ferry.  It was about 45 degrees out.  The Ferry ride was only 17$ but they also charged me 10$ more for parking my car.  The Ferry was about 1 1/2 hours.  The sun was rising so the colors were pinks, lavenders, and then golds.  We passed Breakwater Lighthouse.  We also passed Owls Head Lighthouse.  The photos turned out great!  The sun was bursting through the clouds.  I had two other artists with me who were also members of the Plein Aire Painters of Maine.  We all hiked about a block and painted.  I chose a lobster pound.  I loved the water inside the lobster pounds.  They were blowing air up into the water for the lobsters inside a crate.  They do this to keep the lobsters fresh.  I liked all of the action with men in oil skins (orange plastic pants) putting lobsters in crates and lowering them into the water.  This is the photo I took of the scene I was painting.

Hello!  Good Day!  Yesterday was really cloudy out.  Most Artists will agree that a cloudy day painting is usually not a top seller compared to a sunny day painting!  So here in Maine we do have a lot of cloudy sunless days!  Luckily I am blessed to have two cute Golden Retrievers here waiting to be painted.  Today I decided to paint another painting of Daisy this time from a photo.  I used my computer screen to enlarge the image to paint from.  I prefer to do this compared to a small photograph.  Plus I don't have to go to Walmart to get anything developed!  Duke my other golden retriever doesn't like to sit for a painting.  The long stares make him nervous.  Even if he is asleep!  Once he heard a noise,( me painting), and he woke up and with the shock of his life saw me starring at him closely as I painted him.  No more!  But Daisy poses for photos and will sit for at least ten minutes.
I took my time painting "Painting Miss Daisy".  I didn't have to worry about her walking away.  The computer monitor works just fine to produce an excellent image to paint from.  All of my Oil paintings are on copper panel.  The copper panel is very thick.  A weather vane guy cuts the copper for me.  Then I sand the copper in small circular motion.  I paint on the copper as an artist would a wood panel or canvas.  I use Gamblin's Oil Paints.  I only use Cadium Red Light, Alizarin Permanent, Indian Yellow, Cadium Lemon, Ultramarine Blue, Phalo Turqouise, and Zinc White. (I don't use many of these same colors anymore.  Zinc is very yellowing and brittle.  Alizarin is too dark and fugitive). (Phalo Turquoise is a strange color).  I can mix amazing browns with the Indian Yellow, Aizarin Permanent, and a touch of Phalo Turquoise.  I love how translucent most of these colors are.  The Copper is amazing colors and has great luminous capabilities.  Painting with translucent oils creates a sheerness allowing Copper to shine through.  I leave specks of Copper to shine through.  In the carpet area in the foreground I left areas of Copper free of paint.  You can not see this in the photo unfortunately.  I have found I can use the back of my brush to scratch my name into the oil paint.  My name is then very shining with the Copper reflecting.  When this painting dries, I will coat the painting with Gamblin's Galkyd.  Galkyd is a nonyellowing alkyd medium that further hardens the oil paint and protects the surface.  I will then let this dry.  After a few weeks I will give the painting a coat of Gamblin's Cold Wax.  Cold Wax is a medium made of wax and a touch of Alkyd.  This protects the surface and can be removed in later years to clean the painting.  You can read more about copper on the home page of my website called Why I paint on Copper?  I show some other Artists paintings done on Copper.
Even though I used the computer screen to paint "Painting Miss Daisy 2", I did draw the painting out from life.  Daisy was posing for me and so I drew her on my copper.  I took a photo, downloaded my camera on my computer, and then brought up the image to paint from!  By then she was sitting next to me looking at the computer screen.
I like how your eye does stay on her face.  I love the carpet.  The carpet was so much fun to do!  Thanks for looking and reading today!  I hope you have a fantastic day!  God Bless!

"Painting Miss Daisy"  6x8 oil on copper private collection.

Hello!  I hope you are having a great day!  Today's painting is "Painting Miss Daisy".  Last night Daisy was sleeping peacefully on a beautiful red rug.  I quietly started to draw her on my copper.  Then I started to paint her.  I was suprised she was still laying there.  I painted her for about ten minutes and then she got up!  I had finished much of the painting.  I did the rug without her laying there.  So this is the finished sketch.  Yesterday Daisy ate an entire loaf of bread.  My husband Robert likes to eat whole wheat bread in the Morning as many Dutch people do.  He had put the loaf up above the stove thinking this would be a safe place!  I woke up to find plastic bread wrapping scattered all over the sunroom!  Daisy was just wagging her tail.  Duke, my other golden retriever, had the usual sad look on his face.  He had to watch Daisy eat all of the bread without getting even a slice!  So it is fitting that I painted a picture of Miss Daisy yesterday.

This is Daisy and Duke playing this Morning!  They are truly a blessing!  Have a great day!
