August 30, 2025 Reworked A Stonington, Maine Oil on Copper Painting!

"Stonington Harmony" 8x10 oil on copper 950$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Frame choice and shipping are included.  Sold.  Thank you!

I reworked this painting last night. I sanded the old painting down to remove any

oil paint that was raised.  I repainted most of it.  I think the sky is better more simplified.

I simplified all the lines I had painted on the front of the Blue house.  I added a small

bush on the right lower foreground to stop the viewer's eye and break up that stone

wall.  The Angelique was repainted.  I also reworked the dock and lobster boats.  I was finished

at 2:30am!  I am tired today.

Here is the Margaret Todd Schooner in Bar Harbor from a few days ago.

I had a visit from George Van Hook.  I gave him some huge nice black with gold frames.

I helped him carry them to his van.  He gave me a beautiful 11x14 oil painting of Spring mountains,

a farm, and cows.  The paint quality and texture of his work is just amazing.  I am very inspired.

There is nothing like a new painting in front of you to enjoy.  It was an unexpected delight!

I tried to give him a watercolor oak station since he also does watercolor but it would not fit into

his van.  I have been giving away plein air easels and studio easels for a few years now trying to

scale down, get rid of things I do not use, so I have more room.  This has been kind of fun.  I gave

away a giant studio oak easel I have not used in 25 years and probably would never use to an artist

who does paint large and did not have a large easel. He was pretty happy.  I was so inspired by

George's painting that I ordered some Centurion Op DLX Linen Panels, Premium Oil Primed Linen

Artists Panels made by Creative Mark from amazon size 12x16 and 11x14.

I am going to help Robert clean the house for a few hours then go paint somewhere!

Good night.  Thanks George for you short visit.  Very fun.

August 28, 2025 I Painted Zinnias, Butterflies, Bees, and A Caterpillar At Charlotte Rhoades Garden!

"Zinnia Family" 6x8 oil on copper 450$ framed in gold or black with gold.  Sold. Thank you.

I spent five hours working in Charlotte Rhoades Garden painting Zinnias. I rearranged the

Zinnias to make them into a better design.  I saw so many butterflies so I painted a few into

the background.  A 5 year old child was asking me what I was doing when I was squinting my

eyes to see a Monarch Butterfly.  I told him or her I did not want too much detail to steal the show

away from my Zinnas.  I told the him or her they are moving and I really can not see that much detail.

I told the child I started painting oils when I was four years old.  She or He said he was 5!  I said

well then you are ready to paint in oils!  That really excited the child.  I thought it was an inspirational

conversation.  I painted in a caterpillar and a few Bees.  I always paint the insects last.

I moved the Zinnias around.  I changed the background to a light Green instead of a

dark background.  I normally make the background very dark for drama.  I made some of the

distant Zinnias less bright with less detail and smaller in size to create depth.

   It was so lovely there!

Miss Kitty actually purrs when I am tearing little pieces of raw beef for her to eat.

She loves the Steak raw.  She does not like as much the raw Chicken Livers.  She gets

inspired to eat it when Festus tries to steal her share.  I painted her from life two nights ago.

She did not hold the pose long.  I had to wake her up a few times to paint.  She did not like that

very much.  I do not think she would like her painting if she were human.  But I learn when I paint

things from life.

August 26, 2025 Bass Harbor Lighthouse Painting. Going to Ogunquit To Paint! Lifeguarding...

"Green Sky at Bass Harbor Lighthouse" 7x5 oil on copper 400$ framed in gold

or black with gold and includes shipping.

I worked on this one for a few days.  Small paintings are more difficult.  They

require more time and effort.  I do enjoy the challenge.  The results can be rewarding.

I invented light coming out of the windows of the oil house on the right.  Normally

there is never a light on inside of the oil house.  I liked the green in the sky.  I started with

a rose sky at first.  I had to keep all my vegetation from grabbing too much attention.

I used a brand new 25$ brush for this painting.  My sable brushes are difficult to find because

of them being difficult to import into the USA.  My Copper panels went up 50% because

of tariffs.  I am continuing to paint!

Does your eye focus more on the sunlit portion of the Spruce Trees or do your eyes go to the shadow

area?  Mine continue to remain focused in the light!   I am very excited about a new painting trip

I have planned.  I am going to Ogunquit to paint from September 1 to September 7th.  I will be

trying to do the Ogunquit Plein Air event.  There are hundreds of juried plein air painters there.

I have never been to that area.  I thought I would spend a few days painting and exploring!

My last day of lifeguarding here in Maine was last Sunday.  I will continue part time lifeguarding

in Florida later.  Lifeguarding is an interesting, stressful, full of drama career.  I was making about

a hundred dollars for three or four days.  The lifeguard hours are incredibly short.  There are 2.5 hour shifts

and 4.5 hour shifts.  You can spend more time dressing, loading the car, and driving to work than actually

working.  When a lifeguard is off work their mind is on all the drama that occurred during work.  I wonder

if lifeguarding will become less stressful?  The drama during work comes from people who want to do

whatever they want in the pool.  They can be nonswimmer adult who want to bring very young children who

do not swim in the deep end of the pool.  There are bullies attempting to drown their 'friends'.  One lady was

wearing a lace bra and thong in the family pool.  When people do these inappropriate or illegal things, a lifeguard

might ask them to go to the shallow end, stop drowning your friend, or wear appropriate swimwear, and then

people become angry.  I can try to reason with them.  If they become very very angry I can even ask them to leave.

But I am always sad when I am driving home thinking about all the things I saw and tried to stop.  I think I am

more sad about a very overweight man who had his 4 year old girl treading water for an hour or more trying to

dive for plastic rings.  She nearly drowned four or five times.  She was not having any fun.  She sat on the edge

of the pool out of breath.  He just did not get it.  She did not swim.  She could hardly tread water.  But he was smiling

like a crazy person watching her.  I would have liked to see him treading water also.  There were many young kids

in the shallow end laughing and having fun.  If nothing else, lifeguarding makes me appreciate painting more.

I also realize people do the more dangerous risky things!  I must be more conservative.

The waves have been great here in Maine because of Hurricane Erin.

Good night.

August 20, 2025 Painting The Sunset At Cadillac Mountain Can be Challenging and Fun!

"August 19, 2025 Sunset From Cadillac Mountain" 8x10 oil on copper 850$ framed in gold

or Black with gold.

I had such a great time painting on top of Cadillac Mountain.  I started about an hour or so

before the sunset.  There were two couples having a picnic behind me near their cars. They were

fun to speak with while I painted.  I really thought the sun would reappear under the cloud

bank. I thought the sun would be Red or Pink.  It never did appear again.  The oranges and golds

shot out from under the clouds up into the sky. I decided to commit to that point of the sunset.

People were leaving but saw me painting and paused to watch. I think there were a lot of people

watching me.  They would call out things that were funny.  One guy asked if I covered all the numbers

yet?  Another asked when I was going to paint the sky.  I told him I could predict what would happen to the

mountain and trees but the sky was a mystery.  I did not want to be presumptive about the sky.  We all

laughed a lot.  When I finally mixed the blues for the sky and with large brush strokes delivered them I heard

a few ooohs and oahhs and gasps!  People said that looked great.  It really was a memorable experience for me.

There were a few ladies having a picnic with their husbands by the car.  They were fun to talk to also.  I enjoyed them

so much.

"Porcupine Islands from Cadillac Mountain" 8x10 oil on copper 850$ framed in gold or

black with gold.

I met a lady who had just bought a Seal Harbor painting.  She recognized me.  It was thrilling

to meet her, her children, and husband. I wished now I had put down my painting and asked them

to take a photo of us all together.  Fun!

Good night.

August 14, 2025 Painted Little Long Pond on Mount Desert Island Again!

"Golden Hour at Little Long Pond" 8x10 oil on copper 850$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping and frame are included.

I saw this scene the other night as I drove by Little Long Pond.  I loved the Goldenrod and Queen

Anne's Lace, granite rocks, carriage trail, and the subtle glow of the mountain.  There was a lot of

golds in the sky.  It was just too beautiful not to paint!  I had spent two days painting a larger

painting on location.  Here it is.

"Evening at Little Long Pond" 12x14 oil on copper 1500$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping and frame are included.

I sat more to the left and was seated lower by the water's edge.  The sun was a little higher

in the sky.  The mountain's blue was more intense.  So interesting to paint the scene again.

I am feeding Festus and Miss Kitty and Violet raw meat.  Festus seems to prefer raw

Beef and Chicken Livers.  I am slowly tapering off the canned cat food.  Canned cat food has a lot

of junk in it.  Wheat is not something I want them to eat.  They are much happier.  I cut it up in tiny

bites.  They really love it.  I am surprised their intestines are not affected by this change in diet at all!

Festus is feeling better since I cut his hair shorter.  Long hair was causing hair balls.  He was getting

sick twice a week.  So far he is not tossing any cookies.  I am so glad.

I think Festus still looks very nice with his short hair do.

Here is a scene I saw driving on Park Loop Road.   Good night.

August 12, 2025 It Was TOO Hot On Cadillac Mountain TO Paint!

"Spruce Family on Cadillac Mountain" 6x4 oil on copper 300$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping and frame are included.

I had another reservation for Cadillac Mountain.  I was painting a 12x14, half way finished, talking

to a family, when somehow my gamsol bottle spilled all over the oil painting.  It was ruined. The

man helped by holding my umbrella.  I wiped off the painting.  It was not salvageable.  It was just

too hot to paint on Cadillac Mountain.  I suspect standing on the granite rocks made it even more

hot!  Temperatures had to be 100 degrees.  I decided to paint this small painting instead.

I held the gortex umbrella over my head while I painted.  I am glad I had cold water in my thermos.

I sat in my car with the AC on high to cool down.

"Monument Cove with Beehive" 5x7 oil on copper 400$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping and frame are included.

I cooled off by driving with the AC roaring.  I drove down Park Loop Road.  There were more

parking spaces than usual available. I decided to paint past Monument Cove.  I normally paint

where this painting is.  Right in the middle of this painting along Park Loop Road is my

normal painting spot.  I met 6 plein air ladies.  A seagull kept us company.  I decided to

paint smaller because of the fading light!

   The light was great.

The gull was great!  The ladies took my photo with the gull.

Festus and Miss Kitty are eating raw steak and chicken liver in addition to their dry food

and canned food.  I was reading the label of content on their canned food and was not impressed.

I met Maine Coon cat owners who had them on raw meat and dry food.  My cats loved the raw

meat.  I may give them a little raw egg later each night as well.  I am slowly taking away their

canned food and replacing it with raw meat.  Amazingly their stomachs have not reacted in

a negative way at all.  They seem to be doing fine.

Good night!  I might stay in my studio today and stay cool.

August 9, 2025 Painted on Top Of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.

"August On Cadillac Mountain" 12x14 oil on copper 1500$ framed in gold or black with gold.

Shipping in USA included and frame choice.

I was excited about having a Cadillac Mountain Reservation at 1:00pm.  I discovered I had

run out of Fussy Cat Salmon and Chicken flavored dried cat food.  Festus and Miss Kitty had two

cans of wet food then went to their bowl for the dried food.  Empty.  They both starred at me!

I searched all over for a new bag.  How could this happen?  I ordered 4 ten pound bags from chewy.

They were both starring at me.  Blinking their eyes.  I decided to search the grocery store for an

appropriate substitute!  I found Science Diet Salmon dried food at 22$ for 3 pounds.  They liked it.

I sighed with relief.  I would feel so guilty and paint bad if my cats were suffering.

I put the first painting in a box and drove to the next spot.  I set up the

Russian Yarko easel but could not see over the top of the easel!  I put it back into

the car.  The open box M prochade would do fine.  I taped the copper to the lid.

A nice lady took this photo of me painting.  It was freezing up there.  We were all

chilled to the bone.

"Cadillac Mountain View Before The Sunset" 12x14 oil on copper 1500$ framed in gold

or black with gold.  Shipping and frame are included.

I loved the glow of Sargent mountain before the sunset.  The sky was so luminous.  I wondered

how the sunset would look but really thought the sky was fine.  I didn't paint all the foliage in

the foreground of all the people gathered.  I stood up and painted the ground.  It was too cold

to wait for the sunset. I wished I had stayed because there was a Red ball of a sun that appeared

behind a low cloud bank!

As I was driving home in Trenton, I saw the moon rising above Cadillac Mountain.

It was stunning!  Good night.

August 7, 2025 Little Long Pond and A Thuya Garden Painting to See Oil on Copper!

"August in Thuya Garden" 12x14 oil on copper 1500$ Sold. Thank you so much!

"Evening at Little Long Pond" 12x14 oil on copper 1500$ framed in gold or black with gold.

shipping and frame are included in the price.

I have been very busy painting.  I took the Little Long Pond painting twice out to the location

to work right at the Golden hour of the day.  I also refined in my studio for many days.

Here it is after the first day.  I had a great time.

There is a new Master Gardener at Thuya Garden.  She likes artists working in her garden.

I may go again to paint there!  I did work a little more on the painting background when I returned home.

Painting in Thuya Garden is always a treat.

Festus has fleas. I discovered this from Miss Kitty then I checked Festus!

Festus was not acting like he had fleas.  He wanted to keep it a secret. Miss Kitty was

smart to let me know she had a problem.  Would I please use the flea comb on her?  Yes

I did!  Lady Violet was sprayed with flea spray.  We can not have fleas!  Good night.

August 5, 2025 What A Privilege It Was To See Thuya Garden Today.

I was going to paint at Thuya Garden today on Mount Desert Island. I had asked permission.

Then my cell phone died. I did not want to start working on a painting and then not have a photo

of what I was painting to tweak it later in my studio.  I can come back tomorrow.  I went to

Little Long Pond and sat there waiting for a parking spot while my cell phone charged.

August is the time for Lilies to bloom. There was a great show of Blue flowers too.  Delpheniums.

I brought my Russian easel called the Yarko with me today. I have a few pieces of 12x14 copper

panels.  Copper panels have increase 50% because of tarrifs but I have plenty of copper.  I would

like to continue working with oils on copper.  I think copper makes a very archival and luminous

painting.  I worked all day until the sunset.  I met great people.  A lady in a panic came running up

to me asking if I had seen a white dog.  She ran off stressed out!  Her husband and a White dog came by

and the dog was still high energy leading the way off leash!  He said, "If you see an anxious woman asking

about a lost White dog tell her I found him and am taking him home.  I said, "Ok."   I did not see her.

I imagine she was running all over the park in search for that White dog.  The White dog looked very naughty.

Lady Violet was home safe with Festus and Miss Kitty.  Lady Violet never enjoyed her toys

like this before.  She always tore them up immediately.  Now they have become her friends.

Now I know why my paper towels I use to paint with have cat hair on them.

I am going back to Thuya Garden, then over to Little Long Pond tomorrow to finish

up my sunset painting.  Good night.

August 4, 2025 Painting Fell Off My Prochade Easel And A Beetle was Stuck In Oil Paint!

"Sailing By Otter Cliffs Late In The Evening" 12x14 oil on copper 1500$ includes a frame of

your choice and includes shipping.

I was delighted to get a parking spot farther down on Park Loop Road than I am usually given by

luck.  This means I was able to paint a different view!  I could see climbers on the cliff while I painted.

I was very glad to be painting and not climbing.  I was so happy painting away talking to a few

tourists when I found myself by myself.  A gust of wind took the painting off my easel and it landed

in the bushes and dirt.  I grabbed it and set it back on my prochade box sitting on my lap.

I was painting for about an hour when I noticed a beetle had become stuck in the thick oil paint.

He was kicking all his legs unable to move.  I took a brush and set the beetle on a nearby bush.

I continued painting.  I always meet the most delightful people.  They are very kind to me.  I painted

until it became so cold.  I had to leave.  There was no light left anyway. I was wearing shorts and a t shirt in

July!  Bad idea in Maine because the cold air coming off the ocean can be very cold.  I went to a few

other favorite places to take photos.  When I woke up today I worked and worked on this painting until

it was finished.  There is no dirt in the oil paint or bugs any longer.

Orange Rose Hips are growing on the Rose bushes now.

The sun was setting as I left Park Loop Road.  The color of the sun was a darker orange.

Festus is adjusting to having his hair cut.  Lady Violet seems to be better today having been

deeply grieving for her Grandfather, Grandmother, and Mother.  She will be all right.  Miss Kitty's

hair is growing back.  She is enjoying hiking with Festus and Miss Kitty.  It has taken her a few

years with us to grow trust to hike.  She lost some hair from over grooming. Over grooming and

over eating is common from homeless cats who may have been abused.  We are lucky to have her.

Good night.
